It sounds silly, but I'm never sure what to have for dinner, I rarely 'fancy' anything and SWIMBO can't make a decision on anything!

So how do you work out what to eat for the week, I'm never one to be able to go to the shop and pick out food for a week unless I make a huge chilli and make it last 4 or so days!

I tend to be inspired by the weekend supplements in the papers.

I had Smoked Haddock and Lemon Risotto tonight and it was lovely. thumbup

We just try to vary it. We get a whole chicken every week, so roast chicken one night, and probably a pie two days later. On the other days we try pork (not a speciality, really), pasta, and a delivery. Vegetable delivery is a help, as there is a pressure to cook what we have, and that varies with the seasons.

A cupboard full of cookery books to inspire us, but we still eat the same things quite often.

It's generally cheaper to plan ahead when you shop. I'm terrible at that and often shop for one meal alone (normally weekends).

Having said that, there's nothing better (IMO) than knowing what is for dinner that night and 'working yourself up to it' LOL.

The only thing we do ensure is that there is some staple food at home. Cereals, pasta, chicken, potatoes, salad, etc.

Potatoes, Garlic, Mushrooms, Onions, Herbs (fresh & Dried), Spices(Indian & Mexican), Tinned Tomatoes, Pasta, Rice, Rissotto Rice, Tomato Puree.

As long as that All or Any of that is in the Larder then you can cook almost anything.

Just add Meat, fish, eggs or Veg.

With these staple ingredients you can cook just about anything.
Best thing is to get out what is just before its end date and try to make something edible.!

I guess I just need to do more shopping and make sure I have stuff around, the trouble is I always end up cook the same thing. Peppers, onion, tomatoes and chilli in a pan...

Maybe I need to find some more 'staple' dishes...

Yep. Keep it simple and easy. Staple can be lovely.

Tonight was a quick dinner... ....sliced chorizo, onion and chicken - fried off and then with a tin of tomatoes added. Served with pasta. Simply lovely.

Mmmmm, sounds nice. Do you chop the chicken into chunks or leave it whole?

I start in the Butchers and buy what's looking good.

So tonight I had a grilled breast of free range chicken.

Tomorrow, an perfect pork chop, kidney still attached.

OK, leave the pasta and chuck in a tin of cannellini beans. Did this a few weeks back with some crusty bread too. Lovely.

So the score is 7/10, which is good for a first go smile

Forgot about the bread, and it needed a little herbal flavour to it (apparently the OH doesn't count chilli as a herb, and I forgot to add any salt and pepper!) and it might have been a little bit sloppy. However, it will be made again as it was really easy.
