Take a red, it's getting cold, so I'd guess he's not cooking fish or salad - but then I drink red with everything smile

If he won't tell you what's on the menu, don't spend £20 to £30 on a bottle and risk it'll fail the goes with the grub test. Get one of each at £10 to £15. Both will be very acceptable.

^^ This.

Barolo will do equally well with lamb and beef. And a Chardonnay (Meursault, say) that will pair with almost all white meat and fish dishes.

IF you knew what that food was you could be FAR more adventurous. But these won't fight the grub.

If he cooks up curry put the wine back in the car and go buy a slab of stubbies.

In agreement with the chaps above, I'd recommend a decent South African Pinotage, and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

That Fitou is excellent, actually.

Punches well above its weight IMO.

1 white and 2 reds.

A Chardonnay or Sav Blanc (New Zealand), a Pinot Noir (Chile) and an enormous South African Shiraz to finish the evening with. Interspersed with G&T’s and bubbles. Sounds like a reasonable Friday evening to me drink

Sparkling wine? Nope. Well, not yet.

Lost a weekend drinking Ginocides in Brighton once – that’s Gin and Cider in generous G&T measures….

Doesnt matter what you take! would be bad manners for the host to open it! he should have suitable wines for the meal already! just take a bottle that you think he will like rather than what will go with the meal!

You take the bottle of hock you won at a church fete three years ago, and hope he doesn't serve it to you.

That's reminded me, I need to drink a bottle of G&T tonight.

BTW, have you ever used sparkling wine as a mixer for gin? Works surprisingly well, also massively dangerous thing to drink in the AM, like I did when I first discovered it.
Holy lord, what an idea....

Sainsbury's often have very drinkable Barolo in that price range...
