As the title says, what should I cook for the Mrs. tonight?

Recently we've had a lot of wintery food such as stews, casseroles and the like and of course, lot's of home-made Indian. I've also made a lot of pasta dishes.

I fancy a bit of a change, and strangely have a hankering for mash...

So over to you...

Make a beeline for the chippy..?

Or a nice simple grilled chicken breast with some kind of sauce and the mash you really really want!

I'm wandering in the direction of a pie, possibly venison, mushroom and port... with stilton mash.

Get yourself a cheap, small pork joint. Roast as you would a Sunday dinner after rubbing some salt into the skin in a hot oven.

Find a couple of tatty old apples lying around, cook them down in some butter with a pinch of salt, pinch of cinnamon, until they become a soft mush with any liquid boiled off.

Make mash with lots of butter, splash of milk, properly seasoned and a spot of french wholegrain mustard.

Fry off a diced onion. Add and boil down some cider with a chicken stock cube and another spot of the mustard. You're allowed to thicken with some gravy granules if you like, or be more classical and throw in a some beurre manie. -Lump of flour and butter mashed together.

Serve a couple of chunky slices of the pork with a nice piece of crackling and dollop of apple sauce on top, the mash and sauce, and some cabbage/broccoli/green beans whatever. Can be done with pork chops too.

Sounds a bit dull/traditional meat & 2 veg, but carefully done, this tastes fantastic. You can put the meat in the oven and forget about it for a while, the rest of it takes no more than 25 mins to prepare with a bit of help/multitasking.

Sounds yummy, but am doing belly pork for the folks on Sunday - will try the apple sauce with cinnamon though smile

I think everything 'Gamey' is in season right now, so a pie with mash is a good plan.

If you want an alternative, play the "what's cheapest" game in the meat aisle- we ended up with pork ribs last time, and I'd not eaten them in years.

Pie filling on the stove simmering away, I went with shin of beef in the end in 1/2 bottle of port, with juniper berries. Will report on the final result!

had mash last night with a nice pork chop with anchovie and caper sauce lick

fry the chops then in the same pan add butter, finely chooped garlic, melt half a dozen anchovies and add a couple of spoons of capers - once the anchovies have melted it's ready
