whisky and life
Discussion
On the 25th November 2008 i was made redundant. I comisserated by cracking and consuming most (ok...all) of a bottle of Glenrothes that a previous employers had given me. I couldnt afford the rent on my flat without an income, i had £1500 in savings, and it looked like it would be impossible to get another good job in marketing in the economic climate. I moved back with my parents after Christmas, almost completely broke.
After 3 months i signed on, because there were so few jobs going in jan-feb this year.
After 6 months of looking for a job, constantly being told that i would have to give up on getting a good role and take several steps back on the career ladder, after many not-quite-right interviews, I land a job....running a whisky brand. Working for a stable, privately owned company, run by real people. Selling something made authentically by hugely skilled and passionate craftsmen.
Marketing whisky, something i enjoy a great deal, is not only by far and away the best job i've ever had - its probably the best job i can imagine doing right now.
Today, I drove home in the Tubby after a long but good day. Just before i pulled off, I saw a long, empty stretch of dual carriageway....so I nailed it through the gears, flat shifting at 7,5000 rpm and 18psi boost, enjoying the work i have been able to do to this car over the year. This is a car i nearly had to sell just to raise money to get around town and get to interviews.
2009 has gone from being one of the toughest, to probably the best year I can remember. Thanks, mostly to whisky. And sticking at things even when people say the outcome is unlikely.
to anyone who is having tough time in business or life, keep your chin up, and slainte

This lady has got a nice job as well...

Nothing better after a hard weekend than to start on Monday morning with a wee dram.
Do you think she drives to/from work?

Funnily enough, I met her at a Whisky show here in SA a few weeks back. She ran a tasting session and was happy to participate. http://www.decanter.com/specials/290927.html

As for my job at WG&S? My official (excessively wordy) title is a Business Strategy and Development Analyst. This basically makes me a jack of all trades but roughly role is split between M&A, being the chief exec's female dog, being the principal shareholder's female dog and for the remainder of my time being expected to come up with challenges and fresh ideas. Effectively I have an all access pass and get to think what I would do if it were my booze company. Before you ask I do think I have the best job in the real world (and I am a very happy man!) and I pinch myself that I get paid for this every morning...
