As has been said already, if you don't know much about the recipients whisky tastes, better to steer clear of Islay, as much as it pains me to say it!
Actually fk it, buy an Ardbeg Uigeadail and he can learn to like it!
I'd agree that most whisky drinkers would like a not-too-heavily-sherried speysider like Balvenie. Dalwhinnie was a good call to IMHOn I love it.
Macallan is a funny one, it's generally pretty damn sweet which isn't to everyones tastes.
Highland Park or Talisker would get my vote, I don't know any serious whisky drinkers that don't like the 18yo bottling from either of these distilleries.
Or you could try something a bit left-field like Arran, Ardmore or Old Pulteney. Nothing too offensive to anybody in that selection I hope!
