comes in a large cylindrical transparent container... the freshly made variety, presumably has to be refrigerated

how come it tastes NOTHING like custard ?

What is it with M&S. Why do they think they can improve on stuff. Why do they have to M&S everything.

You cannot 'gentrify' custard. We all know and love the custard that we had at school. A sachet of birds mixed in with boiling water is about as good as it gets. You can't make custard 'posh' .. it is what it is.

Why do M&S insit on doing this with food ? Is it to sit with their brand ? Or is it that I am living in a nation full of ignormases who request this sort of aspiring yuppy crud ?

Bring back birds... mad

or the reaaly lump thick boarding school stuff that tasted EXACTLY like custard

personally i like "real" custard and dislike the Bird's style stuff. I assume that's what the M&S one is.

no custard, but didn't taste of anything... just fancy packaging and it kind of looks good probably with all the right colourings and consistency chemicals

IIRC they used to do a carton of creme anglaise which always tasted rather nice but this stuff is pointless

I'm not sure if it is me but a lot of custards nowadays have a taste of almonds! I'm allergic to nuts so this taste rather puts me off...

birds isn't real custard- its something...but its not custard. it was created during rationing because getting eggs was difficult (a bit like salad cream).

Real custard only has egg yolks, cream/milk, sugar and real vanilla in it. Buy some tesco finest real custard its very close to custard made at home.

yes

Home-made custard is much better than any shop-bought stuff I've ever tried. And it's not difficult to make.

Custard is easy to make and you cant beat it!
BUt I do miss the Choc School puddings with that lumpy custard , you could smell it in the playground at breaktime , they used to make a pink one as well .
My school also used to serve a yellow lemon foam type stuff, I loved it , what the hell was it ? anybody know?
