So Mrs C kindly put a few beers into the freezer, as they were out in the kitchen. I fall asleep, she forgets them out. Some time later I go to get one out and they are all, apart from 1, frozen solid. Damn. Still, I grab the still liquid one and drink a bit, about a third. Then I pop out onto the balcony to have a look around, go to take a sip, and it's frozen solid.

The apartment is a comfy temp, whereas there's a bit of a chill outside.

How's that then?

Trapped carbon dioxide in the pressurised beer escapes in the form of bubbles. For this to happen the CO2 has to boil, which requires heat from outside. So, heat is drawn from the beer to boil the CO2, effect is to make the beer colder. Since it was nearly frozen anyway this was enough to freeze it completely.

And that is also why, a caravanner who uses butane in winter, and wraps his gas bottle up in insulation because it won't boil off in the cold, is an idiot.

There's also the possibilty you moving it made it freeze.

If you pt a liquid into a perfectly smooth container and cool it below it's freezing point unless you agitate it, it won't freeze by as soon as you agitate it it freezes instantly.
There's videos of it on YouTube

Oh, so it's quite normal/common then?

Thought I was Jesus for a minute. Cheers for the explanations.

Personally, I'm disappointed that you wimped out and fell asleep when there were still beers available.

To be fair, so would you after 4 bottles Marlborough Pinot Noir and half a bottle of JD....for lunch.

Still point taken, I must try harder.

Slightly OT but my mate says "To be fair.." a lot and it's quite annoying!

As you were.
