Well, not really too budget constrained. Coming from Canada, steak houses not exactly novel. In the past have eaten at Square (hated it) Ramsays original resto on Royal Hospital roed, (very good) plus loads of more regular places. Will pro do two or three really good meals when I am there. Its an off peak period so should not be impossible.
Really wasn't impressed with the square either, staff and atmopshere were awful.
Massively surprised to hear that, definitely one of the best meals Ive had over the last couple of years. All of the dishes on the tasting menu were ace... I guess they must have good and bad nights... but in itself that probably should mean less stars...

Other than that, the multiple recommendations are pretty comprehensive. Sheekeys, Maze, Zafferano, Zuma. St John is really up there, also.

However:

- I dont agree re: Hayler, I quite enjoy his blog.
- Gaucho is anything but reasonable. Dont get me wrong, I think its a great place, but good value it is not. They hardly even pay to put the lights on in most of their restaurants!
- Benares is over rated.

And to add to the list, I had dinner at Roast a couple of weeks ago and its improving markedly from a year or so ago.

The Goucho Grill does the best steaks at fairly reasonable prices.

The canary wharf restaurant is excellent! Fantastic cocktail menu, food has always been great, superb atmosphere and not too pricey!

Went there a few months ago - fantastic food, highly recommended with the best risotto I've ever had - a touch on the pricey side though.

Went to Artisan in the Westbury Hotel at the weekend (Sat). Very good meal. £35 for 3 courses inc a glass of champagne. You get lots of amuse-bouche so was about 7 courses amd ended up at £53 pp.
The Landau is also very nice just off Oxford Circus. Went to Benares a while back and wasn't blown away..

I recently went to No.1 Lombard Street and had a very good meal. Upstairs is Michelin starred, the brasserie downstairs isn't but is still excellent.
