Food Standards Agency website has this guff:

"The Agency’s research has shown that many people wash their turkeys before cooking, with older women the most frequent turkey-washing offenders..."

So why exactly are you washing it?
Because I learned to cook by watching/being taught by older women. Luckily they also taught me how to use a tap and kitchen sink properly and how to clean up after myself. If there are people out there who don't know how to wipe down and clean countertops and utensils properly then they shouldn't be cooking at all and probably aren't the type to pay attention the anything the FSA had to say anyway.
I'm not fussed about the bloody germs, I just want to know why you would want to wash a turkey! If you're just doing it cos some old wife told you to, fine but stop getting all snippy about knowing how to wash your sink.

And that goes for the rest of you, too!
To get rid of turkey poo - cooked turkey poo may be germ free, but would you enjoy eating it?

The washing the sink bit refers to the food standards agency saying that I shouldn't wash the turkey because it could spread germs. If I came across as snippy it wasn't directed at you, it was more a reaction to some governmental agency trying to tell me how to cook.

Still going to continue washing the turkey though. Its how I was taught and it doesn't cause harm to anyone so why stop?.
