(OK, not difficult to beat Phil Collins! biggrin Video strangely appropriate given recent events in MidEast...)
This was exactly what I was thinking of when I saw the thread title. Great cover.

Let's stop and examine this one for a moment or two.

A stoned non musical screamer who necked himself or a genuine blues legend ( Leadbelly ).

No contest, sorry Kurt you come a distant second at best.
I disagree - with the non musical bit at least... I'd never claim Nirvana did much more than bring an already existing sound/ scene to the masses, but some of their music's astoundingly well written (whether that's attributable to Cobain I don't know - I'm not enough of a 'fan' to know the detail), and I can't think of many bands (with the exception of maybe R.E.M) that 'gelled' as well on an Unplugged session...

With the Bowie example I cited above from the same LP, Bowie undoubtedly has more of a legacy to rock music than Nirvana ever could, but their cover does what the best ones should IMHO - take a song, live and breathe it, and turn out a version that's (arguably - it's all subjective!) better than the original!

Yes agree totally, one of my most listened to songs. Never knew it was a cover though, who did the original?

Not being too difficult to improve on the original Soft Cell version might also be a factor.

yes Good songs but poor vocals and thin electronic sound of the time.

Soppy that it is, a song I could have played at my funeral.... Jose Gonsalez bags himself a Vaio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iECKm2uSN1o

and unbelievably the original Swedish track on which it is based: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcv3v6XfEvM

Talk about a leap!

Aye, that it is. I have both in my music collection.

But both Mrs Pints and I are in agreement on this (I know, we were shocked too): we prefer Matt's version.

Sorry, Biffy.
