This week, in fact this month, I have been mostly listening to The Midnight - Endless Summer, which I discovered from falling down the Career Opportunities rabbit hole on youtube.
A '80s greatest hits album from another dimension. To a man of a certain age, a soundtrack of driving your car through Miami on a hot summer night, of good girls next door and bad girl prom queens. Basically the soundtrack to a teen movie that you never saw but starred you, so you know every neon lit scene off by heart. And the script to this film that becomes a massive cult down the video shop, is the lyrics to every song.
A giant mix of Michael Sembello, Candy Dulfer, Harold Faltermeyer, Georgio Moroder, Wang Chung & Jan Hammer polished to crystal perfection by a band clearly determined to make something that is so 80's that it is almost hurts. Its just over 1 hour long. Why is that important? Because the first few seconds of the album is the sound of a cassette tape being taken out of its case and slammed into deck, followed by a short bit of tape hiss and they repeat that at the end so the actual music is exactly 1 hour long.... the length of a C60...
That is attention to detail, commitment to an ideal.
It is a one album deal as everything else they have done is basically the same and to me this album is so spot on it almost like, what's the point? You've made the best album like this anyone could, why try and do it again?
