Great band, they have put some terrific music out over the years and Floor is a sensational vocalist and performer.

How?

How in God's name have I not come across this band before?

I guess because I'm not into the thrash metal/death metal genres, so hearing how this band are described you might assume that's how they will sound but this is something completely different. This is how I think rock music should be - involving classical elements with an angelic, almost operatic, female vocal. And they've been doing this for over two decades!

By way of a Spotify playlist I came to watch some of their live performances on Youtube and I'm hooked. It's been a long time since I've felt inspired to go see a band live but this one looks like one of those I'll regret if I miss the opportunity and they end up ceasing touring so.....tickets for Wembley in December bought!

You really need to look up Within Temptation as well as said above. Mother Earth is one of my favourite albums

Personal favourite from Nightwish has always been their cover of the Phantom of the opera

It was in fact Angels by Within Temptation that Spotify put on a playlist that I listened to and thought, hey I like this, who is this? So that's another band I've just discovered, and when playing some of their stuff on YT, up came some Nightwish stuff too. Quite similar bands although Within Temptation seem to have gone a little more mainstream.

Now, if we could have Sharon den Adel and Floor Jansen on stage together....

Great band. I saw them once with Tarja and have seem them twice with Floor, three brilliant live performances.

Their album output has been a bit patchy of late IMO but with such a catalogue of music to draw from, including some stunning early albums, they're an awesome live experience.

I'm very much into death metal/black metal etc. but I still like Nightwish. I listened to the two Annette albums when I started getting into metal properly 5-6 years ago, so I have an attachment to those - haven't explored the earlier stuff much yet, Wishmaster is good, but I don't like that accent-ness she has. I've not heard the latest album but I don't think it will be for me, bar 2? tracks the previous didn't use Floor's capability much imho.

You have not come across reaction videos on YT if you haven't heard of Nightwish though biggrin Floor fans have somehow taken over completely. (or those 'vocal-coaches' irked almost zero pedagogists, 99% are clueless pushing quack teaching methods).

Few other 'symphonic metal' bands compare to songwriting/music you get with Nightwish, you're not going to see anything new musically in metal, most of the others have got 'poppier' of late but I like good singers; I never got why some are so anti 'pop' elements/cheese, I love a load of power metal, but Kiske era Helloween is sickly for me, fine if its not what you listen to, but it doesn't make it pop-music.

Don't miss After Forever if you like Floor Jansen, the self-titled record is probably my go-to if I feel like hearing this sort of stuff. Or Delain, I quite like them too. They may not be making music that's as 'metal', but both of those ladies are absolutely metal heads.

And I STILL love them! I'm actually quite jealous of peeps who have seen them live - it's on my bucket list, and I will get round to doing it, once all this madness is over.

One thing which is fun, is to watch music teachers and vocal coaches on You Tube, reacting to hearing Floor for the first time. They're all just blown away - and they also discuss some of the more technical aspects of the singing, and the arrangement of the songs.

Here's one example, but there are quite a few. Worth watching IMHO

If you've got a spare 10 minutes, this live version of my fav Nightwish track 'Ghost love score' is properly awesome. It's a Tarja song, but Floor absolutely nails it, band are stellar too.

The fact it's at Wacken too, with the decent pyro and lights makes it a good watch, particularly the second half. It's a journey song, so get something to drink and sit back.

The aussie girl Julia something is another of the actually good ones, do a much better job than the over the top voice coaches YT is full of.

I originally thought that this was the 2013 Wacken version, but I was mistaken; still tremendous though, but the Wacken recording of Ghost Love Score is truly unbelievable, a heavy metal vocal masterclass.

They are touring at the end of the year - I have tickets for the O2. At the moment its the only show since March I've been going to see which hasn't been cancelled so desperately hope it goes ahead.

Very very much outside my normal area of musical interest, but they are fantastic.

Have you done Graspop/Hellfest, how does it compare? We have said for years that we want to do Wacken but always end up back at Hellfest instead.

Thread derail Notice

Only done Bloodstock (01, 03, 09-12) Wacken (13, 15, 17-19 20) Wacken Winter Nights (19 20) Rockavaria (16) RockFest Tampere (20) Stonedeaf (18 & 19) and a few of the Hammerfests/HardRockHells

Haven't yet made it to Hellfest/Grasspop so cant really compare them, but Wacken is so far ahead of the UK festivals in its offering. We drove the first 2 times we went, and have taken the plane to hamburg the last 3 years. Wacken big plus was camping by your car. so no hauling your gear from a car park to the camping field. the guys direct you into the camping fields, pack up in rows, and pitch your tent in between the car rows. Does mean that people can bring some pretty impressive setups! (sofas, caravans, Ex army catering tents, popup bars, viewing platforms.... ) And the Backpacker's camp is right near to the bus drop off point & close to the festival area entrance by the Beer Garden (some of the car camp fields are nearly a mile from the festival area) while there are groups of Dixies and urnials around the camp fields, they also put in proper flushing loos and shower blocks. Normally you'll have one of these blocks within 5 mins walk of your camping spot.

Also, the village of Wacken and the surrounding area really embraces the festival - the staff at Hamburg airport will all be wearing "Hamburg: The Heavy Metal Airport" all weekend, When you arrive there will usually be someone handing out vouchers to anyone looking like their are heading to the festival for shower access when they are on the way back home. in a survey they found around 80% of the festival goes will head into Wacken village over the weekend, plus another 10 to 15k people will come... just to visit the village during the festival week.

A lot of the private houses will set up bars on their drive or in their homes, the local kids have pedal carts with trailers and will transport your shopping back to the festival entrance for a couple of euros. https://bit.ly/2FzG8SK There will be special shows in the local church, there is a shuttle from the festival to the village's outdoor swimming pool thats a Euro each way.

In a way.. i guess, there is a reason Wacken has sold out in advance each year since 2006 & has so many songs written about it. And thats not to dis Grasspop & Hellfest, which i've heard excellent things about too. We've rolled our tickets over for Wacken Winter Nights and Wacken to 2021 since both were cancelled this year (WWN due to storms which prevented the main stage from being erected and also rolled through the area during the festival weekend)

As an aside and to bring things back on Topic. Nightwish headlined at Bloodstock 03, but I left with my girlfriend to get to our campsite Saxon played (the early bloodstocks where indoor events at Derby Assembly Rooms) and we didnt really know anything about this band from Finland. Gutted now, as didn't really get into Nightwish til 2007 with the release of Dark Passion Play. Saw them live with Annette in Amsterdam with Battle Beast supporting in 2012, and then with Floor at the end of 2012 before she was made an official member of the band

I was due to go to Wacken for my first time this year, so that's a shame. I can't make 2021 due to a family wedding that has been rearranged for the same weekend. grumpy

I have been to Hellfest three times, 2017, 2018 and 2019, each year was exceptional in a way that Download could never be, it is streets ahead in pretty much every aspect; the arena looks fantastic, the food and drink are brilliant, the lineup is booked with amazing care and attention and the locals embrace the festival unlike at British festivals where they are seen as a nuisance.

Clisson is really nice - my brother, who I went with in 18 & 19, smokes, so we walked up to the village centre to the ciggy shop, there's a lovely square that we sat out in for a few (too many) drinks and there was a System of a Down tribute band playing there on the Saturday of 2018, they were great!

My one gripe is that the Thursday night (not an issue for 2019 with Knotfest) is always rammed as the festival area with the entertainment and shops is quite small, apart from that I genuinely can't fault it.

Oh, gripe number two, tickets are exceedingly hard to come by now, in 2017 they took a week to sell out, 2018 went within a day and 2019 in minutes, I didn't try for 2020 but that was tough going too.

On topic: I saw Nightwish there in 2018, they were great smile
