Regardless of how many traffic jams he caused he is still an popular entertainer and nothing more. To suggest he is the greatest living Englishman is ridiculous.
If we were to judge them by their impact on society then Tim Berners-Lee would have to rank much higher.
I wouldn't agree with "and nothing more", but yes, the GLE moniker is ridiculous. If we were to judge them by their impact on society then Tim Berners-Lee would have to rank much higher.
I think Tim Berners-Lee's 'impact' could be judged as not 100% positive, too.
Sounds like we are all in agreement that Mills is a nut job. I still think that while McCartney has had a big impact on popular music is nothing more than an entertiner and we are too quick to put these people on a pedestal.
To save this thread descending into a pro Macca rally I've started another thread to debate the greatest living Englishman. Perhaps those who don't frequent the Music area of PH will bring some balance.

If you are saying that popular singer/songwriters are to be considered "great" and their impact on the world should be judged alongside those who's actions really do influence and shape society then perhaps Kanye West could be nominated in the top 10 greatest living Americans. West is one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 21 million albums and 66 million digital downloads.

Whose. No point in electing Kanye, he'll just say Beyonce should have got it.To save this thread descending into a pro Macca rally I've started another thread to debate the greatest living Englishman. Perhaps those who don't frequent the Music area of PH will bring some balance.

1. No, you're wrong, but I suspect I may be wasting my time trying to explain. You may have to wait until you're older to fully appreciate, as indeed did I. There will of course, be many worthy contenders for the title and we're all entitled to our opinions, (but some of us may have been around longer and can therefore have a greater appreciation) but to dismiss the worthy ones as ridiclous, is of course, ridiculous.2. If we were to judge them by their impact on society then Tim Berners-Lee would have to rank much higher.
2. The impact of the Beatles happened long before the internet. I remember life before the internet, and although the internet is great, life before wasn't too bad at all tbh. If we'd never had it we would not miss it (though it was always going to come, to be invented by somebody somewhere) whereas great music moves people, for a long time (hundreds of years in the case of classical music).
WOW!
(I also remember life before the internet. Getting videos of cats doing funny things was very difficult indeed).

I tell you what, I'd rather go without the internet than go without great music.WOW!

Only teenage girls would find that website (I wasn't tricked into clicking it). So whatever she said there is meaningless
It's a report of her appearance on a chat show in Ireland. The most unlikely thing she said in the interview is that kids in the street recognise her and say ‘You help the animals.'
