Bohemian Rhapsody - Is and probably will always be the greatest pop song ever. Who has ever said a bad word about it ? Who doesn't sing it or at least in there heads when they hear it ? People do this no matter how old they are - That's the sign of a outstanding song.
I despise it. And the only reason it's ever in my head is because it's been forced on me by radio stations playing it and tv shows constantly putting it at the top of their stupid 'best...' charts.

I bloody hate pop music (having done it), but 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' or 'Slave to the Rhythm' would be the best pop music ever 'PRODUCED' as the o/p asked.

Time sensitive of course. They were well ahead of their time.
And neither of those would be where they are without Trevor Horn.

I think that Little Mix have a shout for modern pop songs.

If you hear any of theirs it'll be well and truly stuck in your head for the day.

Yep, Marc Bolans wife - Gloria Jones. I also think its one of the few covers thats better than the original.
Abba surely must be up there as well, nigh on perfect pop- multiple times.
Someones already posted it but I would've put The Archies - Sugar Sugar as well, not deep and meaningful but a good example of a pop song.

It's a cover of a Northern Soul classic. winkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSehtaY6k1U (Still a great pop song, though)smile
Talking of Northern Soul, I think this might be the happiest most joyful two and a half minutes in pop history. Also one of the rarest and definitely the most expensive singles ever sold. £25000 to you sir.bowtie

Actually, giving it some thought, you'd be hard-pressed to top Uptown Funk. Mark Ronson has done a pretty impressive job of blending some classic pop tropes from the 80's onwards into one song: Madonna's drums, Prince's bass, Nile Roger's guitar etc etc.

Absolute tart of a track but it is actually brilliant and enjoyed by musos as well as kids.

Given some of the allegations against Peel, Teenage Kicks takes on a rather different meaning whenever I hear it now.

Boys Don't Cry - The Cure. It's short (a must for a good pop record, anything over 2m45s is a no no), punchy, great tune, simple but meaningful lyrics you can remember and sing along to. Just the perfect pop song.
It breaks your song length rule, but Friday I'm in Love is a much better pop song than Boys don't cry. Just Like Heaven is great too. When he's not being miserable, Robert Smith writes amazing singles.

Some of these are good - some are dreadful (Oasis? In a POP RECORD post? Seriously?), I would give a few points to the people who have put in Thriller (also a very good video) but I still haven't had my mind changed yet ...

Pack your bags, and leave tonight. Don't take your time, gotta move your feet, don't you miss the flight!

I'm really dissapointed the mods moved this thread to music as it's a much wider topic and from flying in the lounge it's now dwindling from a thread that in my opinion deserved a wider audience.

I don't think anyone's mentioned West End Girls yet. It seemed to come out of nowhere as a fully-formed, perfectly crafted pop song.

Coooooool, cooooooool.

Club Tropicana is a FANTASTIC pop record.

Sounds good every summer and very clever lyrics too.

In fact a good number of George Michael/ Wham songs would be in with a shout.

Also the Beegees, The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was superb with great singles such as you should be dancing, staying alive, night fever etc.

Are Eminem songs pop? Because if so those tracks were revolutionary and very catchy too.

Ordinary Angel by Hue and Cry for me.

I know we all have different tastes but I'm staggered that somebody nominated Beyonce Single Ladies, that's possibly the worst song I've had the misfortune to hear, hateful fking racket.

yes

Just like Heaven was my first thought but I think Lovecats might be better.

Cathy Dennis' back catalogue is full of well produced pop. Kylie Minogue's - Can't get you out of my head has to be in with a shout but CD's written or co-written a lot of great pop songs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_Dennis

One of Max Martin's back catalogue for best produced pop. Taylor Swift's - Shake it off or Style are both great pop records.

There's been some cracking suggestions in this thread.

In terms of production I was right up there with Spice Girls (that's one album that I just can't hate when played start to finish), Madonna always has top-notch production - Dear Jessie sounds fresh everytime I listen.

Then of course we get to all the Trevor Horn stuff - I'd say most of his greats are 'anthems of the time' more than pop-songs.

But, does 'pop' mean popular? I suppose that means number ones/time on chart or does it mean a song that gets up and jumping about?

When I was growing up The Ramones were the greatest pop band ever.

I still think Bonzo Goes To Bitburg is the best 'pop' song ever written.
