Sam Smith is a good shout, I just don't get the hype surrounding him.
To me his voice sounds whiny and like he can't pronounce the words properly.

My wife tells me I'm wrong. getmecoat
He's on Graham Norton right now. Notwithstanding my earlier comment about him sounding like he has a snooker ball in his mouth, I've evolved my view to that of thinking he went to the dentist for a filling and has started singing without giving the anaesthetic a chance to wear off.
I'd rather have a filling without anaesthetic than listen to more than 10 seconds of his whining. Honestly, how the hell did he get so popular?
I was just about to agree with the above then realised it was me who wrote it originally!

Anyway, Bowie, I don’t think he had a good voice at all and imho most of his music (that I’ve heard at least) is pretentious crap.

Bob Dylan

Lyrically very clever; average guitar playing and an intensely annoying vocal (IMVHO)

I just don't get hero worship for anyone who happens to have a voice that can make melodic noises.

Or any other hero worship, for that matter.
don't let heroes get your kicks for you, it's up to you and no-one else

AC/DC for me. I don't dislike them, but I can't understand how they've had such a long career and have the highest selling album of all time.

I don't mind the Bon Scott stuff, but since Back In Black it seems to me like they've just re-recorded the same album over and over again, but just slightly changed the track order.

Decent band IMO, but I don't get how they've been so successful...

I like AC/DC! Actually, I like the same AC/DC as you. smile

They've been successful by getting Brian Johnson to sing songs from the Bon Scott era live for the last 27 years or so.

I saw an interview with Angus Young on Youtube recently and he was asked "People say you've recorded the same album 13 times now, what do you say to that?".

He said "Nah, that's not true. It's 14 times".

I'm listening to AC/DC right now, as it happens, but I can understand where you're coming from.

I've just read through this thread and most that I'd thought of have been mentioned already, except...

Van Halen
George Ezra (although that's more of a 'can't stand' than 'don't get')

Queen
Dire Straits

Most of all, though, Pink Floyd... I've tried, I've found a liking or grudging respect for most of the music I disregarded as a yoof, but they still sounds like twaddle to me.

Shame, because Nick Mason seems a great bloke!

I'm really curious to hear from a medical and/or musical professional as I find it amazing how humans can be so set against certain genres/voices/musicians. It must be a brain/ear thing.

I have a pretty diverse musical taste but there are certain genres or artists who I can't for the life of me understand what other people see in them, equally I love some that are equally divisive for others:

Despise: pretty much all Rap, Metal, Club/Dance (whatever sub-genre)
Love: some Indie, some Soul, some Folk, some Classical, some Pop

When I was at college I was seriously into The Smiths and a friend was seriously into Bobby Womack, we had endless arguments until we swapped albums and after a while found we really appreciated each others music but that's actually a rare thing in my experience.

Worst ever Bond theme singer imho. It sounded like a live cat being fed backwards into a mincer.

That's probably it, live shows... I'm sure Brian Johnson can do the old stuff justice. Live shows seem to be the only way bands make money these days. I'm still stumped as to why Back in Black is the biggest selling album ever though.

That's a great quote. I'm glad he can see the funny side laugh

All the guys in AC/DC seem to be very down to earth and don't take themselves too seriously.

Anyway, I've thought of a couple more big acts that I just don't get;

Abba
Bee Gees

Arctic Monkeys for me and I was the generation they supposedly spoke for when they first hit the scene. I've never liked his voice and thought they were massively overhyped.

Also saw them closing a festival in Germany a few years back and thought they were a bit flat. Didn't think much of the frontman obsessing over his hair and image on stage either!

Van Morrison. Sings through his nose. Moondance is particularly bad (and why does he start using an electric shaver during that song ?).

Amy Winehouse.

Ok, a couple of great songs, but the rest....don't get it. I particularly don't get the adoration. They've even erected a statue of her in Camden......which is hideous.

The greatest new talent that arrived since the new century, Take The Box from her debut album and then 20 years old was a work of a genius.

Weezer. The Blue Album is often heralded as a masterpiece, one of the best albums of the 90's, but aside from Buddy Holly I don't think there's a single standout song on it.

The world is divided into two parts. The part that gets Dylan and the part that doesn't.

It's been that way since 1962 and is not about to change,
