...which reminds me of Motorhead's self-titled first album.

The Doors' first album

The Velvet Underground and Nico - somebody once said that hardly anyone bought it, but those that did felt inspired to go out and form a band.

Isn't every band's 1st album their best album?

I'll nominate Shed Seven's 'Change Giver'.

Led Zepp clearly disprove your point, 2, IV and Physical Graffiti are all better than their debut (fine album though it is in its own right).

With you on Shed Seven though.

Not by a long chalk, especially if you have been listening for a good many years.
There are loads...
instantly I can think of first studio albums by Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (each using their band name as album name).

The Cars - The Cars

Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material

Madness - One Step Beyond

I'm a massive HW fan and this is the one album I hardly ever listen to, it's more like a hippy folk album, so unlike the wall-of-sound-synth-wash-space-rock that followed I don't really count it as part of their output.

I'd agree it's not necessarily representative of what came after, but I had to include it cos without the first Hawkwind album there wouldn't be any subsequent Hawkwind albums. I actually love the chilled out strum-along-a-Dave vibe to it, I guess it owes a lot to th'Boy Brock's previous career as a busker. The re-issued extended version shows a bit more of what was to come, packaged with a few rarities like Sweet Mistress of Pain from the Hawkwind Zoo EP and a great cover of Floyd's Cymbaline from the More album.

Case for the defence, lol.

As an aside, I recently saw Hawkwind referred to as "Black Sabbath with vacuum cleaners".
