Free ticket...

Due to a work colleague bailing, I have a free ticket for The Last Internationale in London (Camden) for tomorrow night (Wednesday 29 November)

Appreciate it's short notice, but given them a listen and let me know if you fancy it...

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Indian Blood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-GYMAFITbY

Wanted Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTXlK-O2Q8E

Hard Times (live) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0ncelk9I8c

Pod
Ticket? I thought it was a 'fiver on the door' only jobbie?

I would have grabbed that, but I'm London Thursday evening already this week frown
The UK gigs have been cancelled... but they've arranged this at the last minute.

Anyone who had a ticket can go onto the guest list if they were unable to get a refund. The people I was going with originally can't go - and one of the guys in the office who was going to take it has bailed just now. Essentially, it'll save you a fiver and guarantee entrance.

Oh, and they're amazing live. smile

Does anyone want to go see Parov Stelar at Ally Pally on Saturday?

I have 2 standing tickets face value £44.50 each but unfortunately the OH's mum has died and unsurprisingly we can't go. I need to move them today so could hand deliver in Brum/Cov and surrounds this evening or post this afternoon.

Anyone want to make me an offer?

2017 gigs

Well, looking back it's been pretty quiet - but with a flurry in November.

May - Nothing But Thieves
Relatively intimate gig at Dingwalls with 480 capacity... good gig, but a real sweatbox.

Jun - Prophets of Rage, Brixton
Surprise of the year. Never expected them to match the anger of Zack de la Rocha, but it was actually better than I thought. Great crowd and real good fun. Tribute to Chris Cornell was pretty special.

Nov – Prophets of Rage, O2 Forum Kentish Town
More of the same, but with more PoR stuff included this time. Bouncy, sweaty but a great crowd and a great night. Smaller than Brixton but no worse for it... shame tickets were twice the price.

Nov – Nothing But Thieves, Roundhouse
Tour for the difficult second album... and it was good. Matured as a band, and note perfect. The boy can sing.

Nov – Royal Blood, Birmigham Arena
Wow. I remember seeing these guys with about 400 people at the Electric Ballroom... so an arena tour with 13000+ was a bit different. Still good, but are getting a bit "rock n roll superstar"

Nov – The Last Internationale, The Black Heart
Hastily rescheduled gig following the collapse of the UK dates with Royal Thunder. Venue capacity of 150, but around 60-70 people. Brought a new definition to "intimate gig" as a result. Decent PA system meant good quality sound, but my word she can sing. Huge stage presence and energy, which puts all of the above names to shame. Stopped around and chatted to people after the gig as well. This is what live music should be like - my gig of the year.

Looking forward to 2018... Roger Waters booked, hoping to get tickets for Pearl Jam as well, and that The Last Internationale return to tour their forthcoming new album.

I got dragged along to a gig where they were support a few years back, but ended up enjoying it hugely. Bought one of the EPs and been to most London gigs since then. Certainly at the lighter end of my spectrum, but the first album was an underrated gem IMO.

I similarly got dragged to see them by a mate at Glastonbury this year, they are brilliant and the front man has a cracking voice. Saw them on their recent tour in Nottingham and they absolutely smashed it, haven't seen Rock City so rowdy (in a good way) for a long time!

I've still got two gigs to go to in 2017

Next Friday (8/12), I'm off to Salisbury to see Peter Hook and the Light - I've seen him twice before. First time he performed the two JD albums and various NO tracks and I thought it was great - Second time his tour focused on the first two NO albums and I must say I enjoyed it less. Probably because, personally, I don't think the first NO album is very good - It's a JD album, but without Ian Curtis and it shows - The second album they seemed more at ease with being NO.

This time around I believe he's doing JD and NO's Substance Albums, which promises lots of crowd pleasing hits, so I'm hopeful it'll be a good evening.

On the Friday before Christmas, my daughter and I are off to the Selecter and the Beat at G-Live in Guildford - We saw the Beat a few years ago at Sub89 in Reading (a tiny venue) and it was absolutely brilliant - Not sure it'll be so good at the bigger venue and my only experience of the Selecter is from the 80s when they were, frankly, rubbish. Hopefully, it'll be a good way to kick off Christmas though!

I like the idea Podie. I won't copy it, since I've got a few more on my list, but my last gig of the year was last night :-( What I can say is my highlights...

Bear's Den - Awesome band. Fell in love with Bad Blood that night.
Stereophonics in Swindon - very hot, but very intense (a 2+ hour set with no break).
Victorious Festival - very chilled out, and want to go again.
Lewis Capaldi - a rising star. Will be smashing the charts in no time.
Dizzee Rascal - bass so heavy you feel like your heart is going to bust out of your chest. Loved it.

Favourite venue this year? Crofters Rights, in Bristol.

Ah yes, they used to be a customer of ours until this year.

Some amazing graffiti around there.

Quite happy for people to copy. It’s partly a record for me, but seeing what other people go to is interesting as sometimes you find bands you may not previously have heard.

For example, I’ll check out the stuff you’ve been to as I may well find something I like. smile

I'll add to this if I can remember everything.

Just like to say cheers to whomever suggested parking in cabot circus to get to SWX. It was simple to get to and an utter bargain.

Okay gig list

Tragedy

Supported by Haxan, decent all female three piece. Tragedy are a hilarious heavy metal tribute to the beegees (and a bunch of other bands such as Toto, but my favourite was them doing Slayer Raining Blood going into Raining Men)

Ghost

Supported by Zombi who were st. Ghost were absolutely superb. Possibly my favourite new band I've watched this year. Tobias Forge is a proper front man.

Bury Tomorrow

Uh I didn't actually stay for Bury Tomorrow.... Supported by Any Given Day - German generic-core band, they were ok. Black Peaks - I went to see them. Incredible as always, had a quick chat to Will the singer after the gig, they are nice guys I've spoken to them before in The Globe, Cardiff. Also Crossfaith, who were good fun.

Vukovi

Supported by Press to MECO (reason I went) who were awesome as always. Had a chat with Adam the bassist after the gig and they were talking about sorting out release of the new album. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on what they end up announcing, they have delayed the album for a bit. I'm hoping they have a new record deal and a chunk of promotion. Vukovi were really fun actually, Enjoyed them a lot.

Holding Absence

Supported by A Night Like This and Dead Sea... both a little forgettable. Holding Absence have drip fed tracks in the last year or so and each one has been awesome. Lots of emotion in the performance, the singer Lucas is really good. Some of my favourite songs of this year, got a lot of hope for an album eventually. They are doing a split EP with Loathe first though.

Dream Theater

Supported by Dream Theater... seriously they did two ~90 minute sets. It was seated which is a bit odd., but I was actually quite grateful for it. They were probably the best I've ever seen them. They played Images and Words in full with A Change of Seasons as an encore... incredible. An absolute dream to hear that album live.

Y Not?

It rained a lot. They weren't prepared. We still enjoyed ourselves. Highlights were Vukovi, Jake Bugg and Eyre Llew

Marmozets

Properly good, first gig I went to with friends (instead of just the Mrs/on my own) and it was a good night.

Our Hollow, Our Home

I went because Create to Inspire were supporting, they were excellent and good fun. Tiny newish venue in Swansea. 6 bands for 8 quid (Our Hollow, Our Home, Kingdom of Giants, Create to Inspire, True North, Pioneers, Nihilist) all quite same-y bands but it was a bargain really.

Walter Trout

Supported by Sari Schorr, started off alright but meh. Walter was on good form and I always enjoy watching him play guitar. Didn't really suit the venue if I'm honest but it's a nice night with my Dad and took a few friends for their first Trout gig and they all enjoyed.

Royal Blood

Supported by Black Honey and At The Drive In. Only heard one Black Honey song but it sounded alright, At the Drive In were meh. Royal Blood I enjoyed all the first album tracks and one or two new album stuff. Glad I've seen them but I probably wouldn't go again.

Mastodon

Supported by Russian Circles - superb. Red Fang - up and down but mostly up. Mastodon were incredible! Haven't seen them since 2006. Everything was spot on, seriously enjoyed them.

SikTh

Supported by Press to MECO (second time this year, Luke the guitarist spotted me at the end of the gig and they know me now so he came up and thanked me for travelling down to Bristol, really nice guys) . Devil Sold His Soul... kinda weird like emo-core that listened to too much Godspeed You! Black Emperor... SikTh were fecking incredible. Whole room was absolutely bouncing. One of my favourites.

Got one gig left, Dream State on December 23rd.

Probably my last gig of the year this coming Tuesday.
Gogol Botdello, supported by Lucky Chops at Manchester Academy. If you don't know one or both of these, have a look at Lucky Chops "Funkytown" and Gogol Bordello "start wearing purple" on youtube.

Booked tickets for Australian Pink Floyd for November 2018 in London.

Will never get the opportunity to see the real deal, but I understand these guys are the next best thing.

They're good to watch once, doing all the hits. I made the mistake of seeing them a second time because good seats were available but by then you're very aware it's a tribute band doing a sort of of 'Best of', no matter what they may call themselves.

POR was bouncy and sweaty hehe they’ll never match the aggression of Zack in RATM, but great to hear great tunes live. Good crowd too.

We saw them in Berlin, personally I felt the addition of Chuck D (especially his bits in "Killing in the name of") added a bit to it. Whe I saw RATM, I just never got the feeling of Rage I thought I would.
Perhaps it was a time and place thing.

Really hoping POR announce something not on a school night in the UK next year, ideally not in flipping London again!

So far for 2018 I'm looking at Vice Squad at the 100 Club, possibly Iron Maiden later in the year, plus the possibility of KISS coming back, especially as they had to cancel the Manchester gig.

Profit$ of Rage are really good fun live, well worth seeing, the new album not worth buying though.

This month I've seen Mastodon, who were amazing, really good gig, and Memoriam, who were also awesome.

I have the Prodigy tonight for my final gig of the year, should be a great gig even if they are past their best.

Saw UB40 at Cambridge Corn Exchange last night.

Flashes of great stuff but, and I speak as a fan from decades ago, they were pretty poor.

It may just have been the sound system which was woeful.

The audience was made up of 75% who were just there to hear Red Red Wine and were slightly confused by some of the more obscure stuff they played from the back catalogue. Suited me and I hate Red Red Wine.
