Fond memories of Hammersmith Palais, the last show I see there was Everything But The Girl with Beth Orton supporting.

There was also a little known band called Nirvana that also played there one night.
I remember a mate trying to talk me into seeing "the latest cool band" there, but I'd not really heard of them so didnt bother,
Oasis.

Camden Falcon.... to many bands to mention but first ever London show by Therapy comes to mind. 1st London club to have no smoking simply because there was never enough oxygen in the room to strike a match. If we were not there we would be at the Hampstead White Horse- pretty much the same bands PJ Harvey iirc.

Remeber seeing Oasis there before they became big, also The Stranglers and Sham 69
And the Stranglers played there as one of the "unannounced" gigs they did on the first tour after Hugh Cornwell had left, with Paul Roberts end ex-Vibrator John Ellis as the new members.

You Lucky Git, That was on my bucket list.
Just started a UK tour, not too late. Unless you want to see them with Mr Cornwell, in which case very much so.

On a different scale, but I was sad that the M Club in Crewe shut down. It wasn't a massive venue, but I did see Buzzcocks, The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers there, and it was nice to have a venue that didn't involve a trip into Liverpool or Manchester. Closed down around 2009/2010 for a town centre redevelopment that still hasn't happened.

It was their first (or one of) gigs without Hugh Feb' 91 if my hazy memory serves me right

Fulham Greyhound (now a comedy club I think). Young Gods around 1989.

100 Club in Oxford Street - numerous bands and times

London Astoria at TCR - numerous though Front 242 and Renegade Soundwave spring to mind, in 1990s.

Marquee in CCR - most notably R.E.M. playing a warm up gig under a pseudonym Bingo Hand Job - scratch that, I googled it and it was the Borderline which is close by and still going

Edited by Adam B on Friday 10th March 05:08
Since the demise of the Astoria, that part of London really lacks gig venues of that kind. Odd for what is the heart of the West End.

100 club is still going isn't it?

Harlow Square, closed only last month and developers have reneged on there promise to build a new venue. Used to be lots of Reading warm up shows in the 90's there.

Don't doubt the venue but can we say 'who' played there? It would give some context.
Bongwater
Power of Pussy just an all time favorite album! Missed their London underworld show at the time in favour of a Rough trade coach trip to Wendover for thin white rope IIRC.

That would be it - unannounced dates other than in minor adverts. Though I did see an advert for the gig in the Coventry Tik-Tok, but not until it was too late to get there. I've got a review of the gig somewhere.

Manchester Board Walk has also gone.

'Band On The Wall' appears to be still up and running.
Sure is, I was there on NYE. The Manchester venue I miss is the International Club on the corner of Anson and Dickenson. Among the wide variety of bands I saw in there:

The Ramones
Dr Feelgood
The Bangles (the toilet was behind the stage, I spent some of the gig taking in the rear view. Ohhhh Susana Hoffs)
Loundon Wainright
Tom Robinson Band
Half Man Half Biscuit

There were loads more, but memory is the problem.

The Boatrace in Cambridge. Went to a load of gigs there including Oasis for £4 a ticket in I think June or July 94. Was run as a venue by the City Council, now it's a wine bar.

Pleased to say I was wrong, from Wiki:

"In September 2010, it was announced that the 100 Club would close at the end of 2010 owing to continuing losses. A campaign was launched to keep the venue open, supported by musicians including Paul McCartney, and in February 2011 a partnership with Nike subsidiary Converse was arranged, enabling the 100 Club to remain open"
