I've lost count of the number of bands I've played in over the years & it's all true. I've met them all, blokes in toilet circuit covers outfits who got involved because they were convinced they'd be going home draped in knickers every night. Wannabe rock stars whose spandex pants were the closest they were ever getting to Times Square.

Fret wkers who REALLY wanted you to see they suffered for their art. Endless drummers only on nodding acquaintance with what you might loosely term 'rhythm'.

Singers so flat the walls would be jealous, you name it I've jammed with them, special shout out to Denis, yes Dennis but with one 'N' because that's obviously windswept & interesting who insisted everything should be underpinned with the tone of JJ Burnell, especially ballads.

I thank the lord for Mixcraft, Garage band & all the rest so I no longer have to hang out in dingy & electrically dangerous places with these delusional humps, but at the same time, oh how I miss gigging, the tip of the arrow that never quite makes up for the rest of the st.
Why is when I read that, it's in the voice of Frank Drebbin?

The Police at Newcastle Mayfair, I think 1978, just as they were breaking with 'Roxanne', supported by The Cramps.

Still have the ticket stub.

Before that I used to go and see Sting in Last Exit at the Newcastle Theatre bar on a sunday lunchtime - 20p at the door and a cloakroom ticket, Sting with his yellow and black stripey jersey on which gave him his name. Guy on a Hammond with a Leslie speaker, can't recall his name but still doing the rounds and not bitter that he never made it.

Happy days!

I've just realised I'm old!!

Twelve years after that, I saw The Charlatans in the same room, touring their first album. Saw them again last year & spent a moment mulling over seeing the same band twice, twenty six years apart.

When did it go? I was in Newcastle until 1993 & can't recall it's demise during my time.

1999.

As for your seeing the same band 26 years apart.

How about seeing a band (American at that) here in UK (March 24th 1980 Oxford) and again (July 9th 2017 Hyde Park)?
I make that 37 years 3 months (I'll leave out the odd days!).

biggrin

X Ray Spex, The Clash and some others (The Jam?) at a RAR gig in one of the London parks in 1977....hazy recollections, can't think why!

...Soft Machine, 1976, Newcastle Playhouse - televised on BBC, 'Softs' Tour.

There at the end - Alan Holdsworth, Cluny Newcastle 3 years ago (RIP, genius), with Chad Wackerman on the tubs (what a fantastic drummer)

Every thread, in every forum, everywhere is a competition biggrin

I've been to see a lot of bands towards the end of their careers (They've a good backlog of material, often in small venues and are relatively cheap), but I saw a band recently who I suspect I might look back on and say I saw them at Swanage in 2017! biggrin

They were called Galaxy Thief - Lots of covers, but their own stuff was pretty decent and they definitely knew how to work an admittedly fairly lubricated crowd (I wasn't, so I can judge a little better).

Of course, they'll probably just disappear into obscurity like most other groups of local lads, but they definitely had something!
