One of my favourite from Bob:

So long honey babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye is too good a word, babe
So I just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

Prefab Sprout:
I was the fool who
Always assumed that
I'd be the shoes and
You'd be the doormat

Billy Bragg:
Where politics mix
With bingo and tits
in a money and numbers game
Where they offer you a feature on
Stockings and suspenders
Next to a call for stiffer penalties for
Sex offenders

Dizzee Rascal
Here's something that I should've stressed early on
Don't go spending all your money till it's gone
Cause the tax man's gonna want his paper when it's due
And there's nobody above the tax man, especially you
And another thing, buy a house before you buy a car
Don't tell no one where you are, even better if you're far
Everybody knows you're a gangsta and that Porsche looks great
But do you really want it sitting on that council estate

How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then

You claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

And later from the same song...

Come down.
Get off your fking cross.
We need the fking space to nail the next fool martyr.

The first is the clever one. The second (delivered in the song with increasing anger) isn't clever but is very right...

Every time I play this song (Mr Horrible, They Might Be Giants) I'm always taken with this single sentence which manages to make up most of the second verse all by itself:

Would it be ok with you/ if we wrote a reminder/ of things we'd forget to do otherwise/ using a green magic marker/ if it's alright/ on the back of your head?

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life

These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Rows and rows of disused milk floats
Stand dying in the dairy yard

And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk
Bottles to their hearts

Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come Fast and furious
In a town called malice.

Talking cars and engines on another thread reminded me of this:

I was driving to Damascus when a sandstorm rose
The road disappeared and the axle froze
I was low on gas and lower on hope
I covered my eyes and I felt for the rope

The wind was howling and the air it stung
I breathed in dust and it burned my lungs
And through the dust a driver came
Small and twisted and his face was plain

He said love them all
All that you need when your heart is small
Love them all
You're gonna find them when they fall

It was not hard to make him out
He simply spoke while I had to shout
He asked me where you driving child?
His voice was clear but his eyes were wild

I said I'm going to the city
To meet the high and proud
And let them know that anger
Is the nature of the crowd

He said love them all
All that you need when your heart is small
Love them all
You're gonna find them when they fall

He said your words are lost on the dead
When you belong to them
Once I was dead and I knew the words
Of those dry and hollow men

And he took the rope and he hitched me up
Freed me from the dust
And he helped me round the pilgrims up
And lead them to the bus

He said love them all
All that you need when your heart is small
Love them all
You're gonna find them when they fall

if you don't know it...

I think that's an example of a not very clever lyric.

Memories of this album come flooding back, great times!
Not on that album, but "We've got Tonight",

I know it's late, I know you're weary,
I know your plans don't include me,

One day, a million years ago, in New York City,
an American ex girlfriend asked me to drive her
and her new boyfriend, (English, like me), to J.F.K.,
as he was going home, (I was staying in N.Y.C.).
As I drove along the Van Wyck, Bob Seger came
on the radio, singing this song, she was in the back,
mouthing the words at me in the rear view mirror,
"We've got tonight", and we did have that night,
all's fair in love and war, way to go Frank.

He's a fine figure of a man and handsome too
With his eyes upon the secret places he'd like to undo
Still he knows who knows who and where and how
And I hope you're happy now
He's got all the things you need and some that you will never
But you make him sound like frozen food, his love will last forever
Still he know what you want and what you don't allow
And I hope you're happy now

I hope that you're happy now like you're supposed to be
And I know that this will hurt you more than it hurts me

He's acting innocent and proud still you know what he's after
Like a matador with his pork sword, while we all die of laughter
In his turquoise pajamas and motorcycle hat
I hope you're happy now because you'll soon put pay to that
I knew then what I know now I never loved you anyhow
And I hope you're happy now

Good evening I'm from Essex
In case you couldn't tell
My given name is Dickie, I come from Billericay
And I'm doing very well

Had a love affair with Nina
In the back of my Cortina
A seasoned up hyena could not have been more obscener
She took me to the cleaners
And other misdemeanours
But I got right up between her
Rum and her Ribena

Well, you ask Joyce and Vicki
If candy-floss is sticky
I'm not a blinking thicky
I'm Billericay Dickie
And I'm doing very well

I bought a lot of brandy
When I was courting Sandy
Took eight to make her randy
And all I had was shandy
Another thing with Sandy
What often came in handy
Was passing her a 'Mandy'
She didn't half go bandy

So you ask Joyce and Vicki
If I ever took the mickey
I'm not a flipping thicky
I'm Billericay Dickie
And I'm doing very well

I'd rendezvous with Janet
Quite near the Isle of Thanet
She looked more like a gannet
She wasn't half a prannet
Her mother tried to ban it
Her father helped me plan it
And when I captured Janet she bruised her pomegranate

So you ask Joyce and Vicki
If I ever shaped up tricky
I'm not a blooming thicky
I'm Billericay Dickie
And I'm doing very well

You should never hold a candle if you don't know where it's been
The jackpot is in the handle on a normal fruit machine

So you ask Joyce and Vicki
Who's their favourite brickie
I'm not a common thicky
I'm Billericay Dickie
And I'm doing very well

I know a lovely old toe-rag obliging and noblesse
Kindly, charming shag from Shoeburyness

My given name is Dickie
I come from Billericay
I thought you'd never guess

So you ask Joyce and Vicki
A pair of squeaky chickies
I'm not a flaming thicky I'm Billericay Dickie
And I'm doing very well

Oh golly, oh gosh come and lie on the couch
With a nice bit of posh from Burnham-on-Crouch

My given name is Dickie, I come from Billericay
And I ain't a sloutch

So you ask Joyce and Vicki
About Billericay Dickie
I ain't an effin' thicky
You ask Joyce and Vicki
And I'm doing very well

Gnarls Barkley:

It's even dark in the daytime,
It's not just good, it's great depression.
When I was lost, I even found myself
Looking in the gun's direction.

Read some Kerouac and it put me on the tracks to burn a little brighter now
Something about roman candles fizzing out, shine a little light on me now
Found a strange fascination with a liquid fixation, alcohol can thrill me now
It's getting late in the game to show any pride or shame
I just burn a little brighter now, burn a little brighter now

Doctor says my liver looks like leaving with my lover, need another time-out now
Like any sort of hero turning down to zero still standing out in any crowd

Pulling seventeen with experience and dreams, sweating out a happy hour
Where you're hiding 29 you know it ain't a crime
To burn a little brighter now, burn a little brighter now

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone
Dragged down by the stone (stone, stone, stone, stone, stone)
~~~~~~~~~~~~

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
