Gig Plans - 2018
Discussion
Saw The Boxer Rebellion in Leeds (Brudenell Social Club) last weekend. Absolutely superb and got my signed CD before official release so happy about that. Enjoyed the support act, Victories at Sea too. Next up is the Wonder Stuff (again) in Newcastle next month supported by Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
Managed to get tickets for the Decemberists in the pre sale, its an actual gig the entire family wants to go to, probably the only one ever

Decemberists
I've got a few lined up now;
Magic Numbers at The Scholar in Leicester in May
David Ford at The Roadmender in Northampton in June
Travis doing their first album in full at Cambridge Corn Exchange in December
I'm debating either Ash or Feeder at some point too but their dates are a bit rubbish

I’d never come across him before and enjoyed his set, will certainly search out his stuff on Spotify. Loved the encore with Elbow, what a great tune:

Three gigs last week:
Moose Blood @ Institute 1 in Brum
Gig for my daughter. They are one of the better bands of the current generation of inoffensive indie boy bands. They have some decent numbers and put on a decent show. Shame they have become mired in their second sexual assault/harassment case.
Obituary supported by Exmortus @ Institute 2 in Brum
Not sure if this sold out but its the fullest I've seen the second room @ the Institute in a long time, had to push through the crowd to get anywhere.
Ashen Crown were up first, but I missed them as I'd already seen them support Memoriam before Christmas and I wasn't really that into them. Exmortus were up next, decent enough heavy and technical thrash band that was new to me. They struggled to do anything with the lethargic crowd. I wouldn't mind seeing them again on one of the smaller stages at Download or Bloodstock but I won't be buying any records on current showings.
Obituary rounded out the night with a great mix between the awesome new(ish) album and old classics. They played about 14 songs, 5 of which were the 5 best tracks off the new album. I would have liked a longer set though, 14 songs is a bit short, and they weren't on stage for much over an hour.
Sounded great to my ears with a wonderfully thick guitar sound. John Tardy disappearing off stage every third song or so was a bit annoying, does he have an issue with his throat or something? He certainly sounded great when he was growling. Crowd was better during Obituary but still mostly lethargic, I guess we are all old now.
Belle and Sebastian @ Rock City Notts
I just love Rock City on a Saturday for gigs, car park right next door, finishes prompt at 10pm because the club night starts right after, better than average beer selection (Punk IPA is better than the usual mass market larger on offer) I guess I'm old as well.
Very twee set that mostly mined their superior early catalog but more enjoyable because of that. Played about 18 songs, would have liked a two hour set but that would have meant they would have needed to start earlier.
Really don't get the obsession of the band these days to get people dancing during the gig, but I applaud them for it. Much mirth had by all but the band when they dragged about 15 people on stage to dance for the final pre encore number.
Next gig: Cannibal Corpse with Black Dahlia Murder @ Rock City on Saturday. Can't wait for this one.
Also picked up tickets for Myrkur @ Hare and Hound in Brum. Oceans of Slumber are meant to be supporting, so should be a good gig.
