Heard this remix of Dua Lipa's "New Rules" on the radio a few times ...

https://youtu.be/wLjNTTCVat0

Totally blown away so investigated further and it turns out there's quite a craze for remixing modern stuff in an '80s style on YouTube. One thing though, where do they get the a cappella vocal track from to be able to layer their own instrumental behind it? I want to have a go myself!

Not an expert, but I think with some sound software you can more or less isolate the vocal from any track.

Check out Synthwave on YouTube. Its a new genre of music that is effectively just a re-visiting of early 80s Hi-NRG/ Italo/ soundtrack/ library type music.

Has that sound, but without the vocals.

The wonderful Mike Flowers was doing something similar although more tongue in cheek in the mid 90's. Taking songs and re-doing them as if they were made in the 60's.

And Nouvelle Vague did '80's covers in an easy listening style (I love most of these actually!)

80's style remix of Need U 100% by Duke Dumont:

So authentic I assumed this was the original track.

Great stuff!

I have a ton of music written - 50+ tracks - just need to work it all up in a specific style. Think I'm going to do it synthwave style! Just need a Jupiter 8 and a Linn Drum! Already got a D-50 and a DX7 hehe

Reminds me of everything I hated about 80's music. This could be another contender for "just don't get it".

Good grief.
That's pretty much everything that was awful about the 80's Simmonds drums, gated reverb on the snare and DX7's.
I hope it was sequenced on an Atari ST with an Akai sampler!

The Jazz group I like, and I'm not a Jazz fan.

The Sam Smith, meh. Don't know the original so can't compare.

Or these!

If you don't like it skip to near the end, it gets rather surreal! biggrin
