I'm 43, I ditched Radio One when Chris Moyles left the breakfast show, he played music that was very similar to my own tastes and I actually found him and his "crew" quite funny, I now listen to LBC in the morning and flick between Radio X, Kerrang and Absolute.

Modern chart music is generally crap.

It went down hill after they launched the racist 1Xtra station, no one was listening to it even the target audience. They then decided to push the 1xtra DJ's and "black"? music onto radio 1.

Danny Howard used to be really good on a Saturday afternoon, Mr Jam is on now and plays a lot of garage. fk that st.
Why is 1Xtra racist? Its just music for the more urban sections, bit like Asian Network, etc. Mr Jam is one of the better ones... Candyman and Limelight are enough to make anyone suicidal however.

Anyway, 6Music breakfast show is great, 1Xtra on the way home, Radio 1 residency and late night dance shows downloaded to my phone for to keep up with whats going on. cool

6music all the way. R1 on Friday night, only because I still love a bit of house. It's basically 90s regression as said.

I can’t listen to the daytime shows any more, but the late night specialists are still good. Btraits and Benji B are my first choices on iPlayer, followed by the other Friday night shows and some of the guest residencies.

Radio 1 is for children.

Radio 2 is for adults.

Radio 3 is for adults who wear roll-neck jumpers, interesting glasses, and lament the demise of SAAB.

Radio 4 is for adults who believe they can do a better job than Theresa May.

Radio 5 Live is for adults who believe they can do a better job than Gareth Southgate.

Radio 6 Music is for adults who like to think of themselves as "musos".

Same as the MOBO's... Music of Black Origin. Its a hark-back to the days when black people were under represented in the music industry, and as you've so delicately pointed out, there is a big difference between what the, predominantly black and urban, youth listen to such as grime, hiphop, UKG, bassline etc and that which their white counterparts listen to.

You've stated you dont like the music, so surely better for you to have it on a separate station so you can chose to listen, or not.

I'm white and listen to 1Xtra. What does that do to your stereotype?

Ha ha ha I'm black and don't listen to 1xtra. Go figure! 1xtra was failing miserably that's why they have merged it into radio1 thus ruining it. Not all black people are into grime, hiphop etc. What does that do to your stereotype?

I left Radio 1 10 minutes into Grimmy’s 1st show after he took over from Chris Moyles. Haven’t listened to it since. About 18 months ago I discovered Moyles was doing the breakfast show on Radio X, so now enjoying that. Worth checking out (obviously depending on your opinion of Moyles, I know he’s not for everyone) wink

Funnily enough they were trying to decipher the lyrics of the “ting from barking” song the other day, and came up with a couple of parodies. Good for a laugh, I think they have clips on their Facebook page...
You've simply regressed back to the 90's like I have with listening to Moyles on X lol
Johnny Vaughn on 4-7 is also worthy, much funnier than he ever was when on TV
I'm another one listening to Moyles on X. I also gave up Radio 1 when Nick (I'm a 12 year old girl in a mans body) Grimmshaw took over. I tried radio 2 for a while but I'm so glad I find Radio X because I'm actually enjoying radio again.

I've never been a fan of Vaughn, I find him a little shouty and aggressive (yes, I'm aware I just said I like Moyles! who is also shouty and aggressive) but maybe that's because of the TV stuff. I'll give him a go then.

Didn't a lot of us have a similar conversation about modern music,
with our parents?

Besides do we have to know what every single modern slang lyric means, to
actually enjoy a tune. Sometimes the rhythm, beat, whatever you
want to call it, can carry a song. imho.

Well I'm 55 and I listen to Radio 1 every day!
Totally with you on Grimmy though, absolute total self obsessed knob. I listen to 1extra during the breakfast show. I love Scott and Chris.
I think it's because I like new music rather than wallowing in the old stuff. It can get a bit dire when the same playlist gets repeated about 20 times a day, but overall it still sets a standard.
6 music is just to much like hard work for me, lots of "alternative" dross that you have never heard off and that will vanish without trace. To my view 6 music is typically middle class old school BBC that is right up its own arse.
Radio 1 might be facile but at least it doesn't take itself too seriously.
Ps bring back Mark and Lard smile

Radio 2 is for incontinent old biddies wink (well, seriously 50+)

There is a gaping chasm between the target audience of Radios 1 and 2 (late 20s to 40s just aren't catered for).

6 music can be ok, but like you say can be a bit too muso/alternative.

+1 for Johnny Vaughan on Radio X - he is pretty funny. The issue though is that Radio X's playlist is very limited and 'laddish'' (same old Liam Gallagher, Foo Fighters and Green Day on repeat).

What is the reason for this? Is it because they believe that a limited playlist is what keeps listeners? Do they get a performing rights discount for multiple plays? Something else?

Chris Moyles has the "Platinum Hour" on Friday morning 9-10am where he plays whatever he wants - and it's generally great. If the radio station did that all the time I'd stay tuned, instead of channel hopping. But most stations seem to have a limited playlist for some reason.

I've wondered about this as well. Like you say, does sticking to the same songs each day keep the PRS costs down? Or is it because the station wants to play it safe?

Luckily I don't listen to the radio much during the day any more, so I don't get (too) overloaded with the same stuff, but even so I notice when I do listen the same stuff does keep cropping up on Radio X (and they are especially obsessed with the Gallagher's and the Foo's), which can be a little tiresome. Still, it's a lot better than most of the dross out there on the BBC or certain other commercial stations. I used to be inflicted with Heart at work a couple of years ago, Christ that was awful, literally the same (st) songs repeated about 3 times a day, every day. Funnily enough after a while the office radio broke whistle

Gave up on Radio 1 when Peel's programme stopped being on 5 nights a week.

It's always been crap most of the time, hasn't it?

If my radio is on, it's Radio 4, oddly a habit I've had since my youth.

Well that's everyone in the Conservative Party then! Although no-one actually knows how many people that is... wink

I appreciate your quotes were sweeping generalisations and probably not to be taken totally seriously, but that would only be true if you only listened to Radio 4 between 6 and 9 in the morning!

I'm still surprised people listen to radio!

For a tenner a month on Spotify I have an uninterrupted stream of brilliant music variety on any device I want and no inane guff from any 'presenters'.

Spotify + LBC is a good mix for me

When driving i'll usually put on LBC, and if it's a crap discussion just put my own playlists on.

i'm 40+ too - does listening to LBC put me in the 'mr angry from surrey' category? biggrin
