Synth/Retro wave
Discussion
I've grown to really like this genre, and want to try and get other people interested as well.
It's 80's based music with a modern take, quite atmospheric in places and energetic in others.
As an album, I love The Midnight's "Endless Summer", best served with a drink in the late evening, or on a long dusk drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pUL7u-mYqA - "Jason" is my favourite song on the album, at 17:26.
As an individual track, FM-84's "Running In The Night" is an excellent example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvZskcqdYcE
Just wondering if there are any other fans on here, and if you have any other tracks to share. Plus, be happy to meet up at a Midnight concert should they come over to the UK!

Big fan here. I have lots of Synthwave playing on the radio in my arcade when playing NewRetroArcade in VR...how nerdy is that?? It's 80's based music with a modern take, quite atmospheric in places and energetic in others.

ZETA (with Daniel Tompkins of TesseracT fame):

The genre is getting massive. I love GUNSHIP; ex members of Fightstar... I don’t think they have one bad song; which is an impressive feat (GUNSHIP that is, not Fightstar)
They’re putting out their second album soon. The first album has a trailer, to give you a taste; all officially licensed retro footage too!

Love this genre, and normally just have Youtube running through them in the background when i'm at home.
Can't find them on Amazon Unlimited though, where i could on Spoitfy. Just moved over to Amazon from Spotify recently, so maybe they are tucked away, or i just need to create my own playlist.

I've got a small playlist on Spotify here, if it helps: https://open.spotify.com/user/fairfieldsteve/playl...Can't find them on Amazon Unlimited though, where i could on Spoitfy. A topic I’d happily sit in the black chair and get thrown questions at by Magnus Magnusson!
Totally agree on The Midnight. “Endless Summer” is endlessly listenable from beginning to end. But make sure you get the “Days of Thunder” EP and the latest album “Nocturnal”.
I think they’re the most mature and perhaps visible (?) of the Future 80’s, synth, retro set.
Others to follow:
Brothertiger. His album “Out of Touch”, fantastic. He’s lately released a take on the whole Tears For Fears album, “Songs from The Big Chair” is a smooth set too. Brothertiger is getting absolutely massive though. Been around for a few years but one of the most respected and popular artists in the field. The title song from “Out of Touch”, perfection.
Betamaxx. Have three full albums out now I think, with the latest, “Archaic Science”, being my favourite. ‘Heart Strings (feat. Rat Rios)’ is a wonderful track, and I pump that one out loud.
Thought Beings. I’ve only really tried their album “Alchemy”, but songs like ‘Hell of High Water’, ‘Holiday’ and ‘Staying Here’ are brilliant. They’re getting a big following.
Futurecop. Cannot be overlooked. Whilst I’m not a big fan of some of their stuff, it’s a bit Terry Pratchett, LOTR for my liking, their latest “Fairy Tales” and the associated remix album is outstanding. Tracks like ‘Glowing’ and ‘Into Your Heart’ are always on all my Amazon Echoes at the same time!
I’ve got to give a mention to a pal of mine - Phantom Ride. Album out and a couple of EPs. Dave mainly does music for TV, ads etc in the states but his remix skills led people to tell him to release an album. It’s the classic, 80s retro vibe. I’m trying to entice him to think of coming to Europe and playing some sets across places in Marbella. Lots of places that are tuning into this music, and moving away from the Nikki Beach tuneless rubbish. I go into a few bars around here and in some of the more laid back venues, it’s primed for this sort of smoother, late night, ambience. Sun goes down, the palm trees starting to sway, few people on the beach, barman mixing just cocktails. It’s ready, I keep telling Dave.
More Tropi-pop stuff, St Lucia, might hit the mark. I had their first album “When the Night” on constant rotation for like a year. I sometimes download dozens of albums from iTunes in one hit then promptly never listen to them. Was sat in the lounge at Houston airport waiting for a connection to Denver International one day, killing hoooouuurrrssss, I clicked on their album by accident. Hooked from that moment on. Poppy and big band at times, but very few compete in his precise slice of the genre.
Of course bands like Cut Copy with their early two albums are unmissable. Later stuff is a bit off the boil. But won’t forget going into a bar in Meribel one ski season, and they played “Bright Like Neon Love” from beginning to end. Best atmosphere.
Of the French guys, you’ve got M83, but think he’s lost it a bit and is way too mainstream and ‘cinematic’. He’s lost himself. But the early albums, paired back are awesome. Saturdays = Youth is one of the best albums full stop across music in last 25 years.
But staying with the French, there are a lot of acts associated with the Valerie Collective. The king is Anoraak. “You Taste Like Cherry”....sublime.
Sorry I could go on and on. Absinth3, RF Extreme, Android Automatic, Crozet, Absolute Valentine, Timecop1983....
My next door neighbour in London is a well known DJ, band, and I get some tips off him too. When he’s not away touring!
Great genre!

No worries!
Before I forget....Thunderclaw!!
They haven’t released too much stuff, but a lot of love for their music right now. I once picked up my wife from the airport and their “Heart” started to play. It was quite late in the evening. Roads were free, so not much stopping and starting and the music just suited the mood.
At the end of the song “I love you..” is said really quietly. My wife then turns to me and says, “arrghhhh, I love you too!”. ‘But I didn’t say anything’, I looked at her quizzically. Then I twigged. ‘No...that was Tom Cruise who said that!’
Queue a spell in the doghouse for ruining the moment :haha:
Will follow this thread to see what other suggestions anyone else has. All ears!
