Very impressed with Numan too. Much heavier and more "industrial" than previous works.

I must be getting old - I watched the entire 2-hour programme in 35 minutes. Wasn't a single act on i could stomach.

Albert Lee!
Switched R2 on last night and was chuffed to hear what I thought was Ricky Skaggs doing Country Boy. Turned out RS was doing a cover of Albert Lee song. Never knew but will be checking out more of Mr Lee.
Albert has played with everyone from Chris Farlow to Eric Clapton via Chas 'n' Dave and the Everly Brothers (and Ricky Scaggs smile)

I love this clip from an old documentary for the reactions in the control room >>>> https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Rx-zaBjow

As Emmylou Harris said: "When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I’ll be able to say, with pride if that’s allowed, that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.”

I got through it quickly, but not quite that quickly. Numan was the only one I watched all of, and that was only a couple of songs. Nice to hear the audience hadn't been briefed and started clapping in a quiet bit in his first track. There were a few live tracks that I thought I might quite like, but figured they would get annoying after a short time.

I thought that the song was OK, but Numan's dad dancing grated a bit for me

YMMV

Thanks that one performance really opened such a wide range of unknown music for me. It's really quite important to me!

I was 17 and listening to rock and house music. No interest in jazz or the brass sections at all.

My old man had Hot Rats in his record collection which I had taken over. I'd never listened to it but was always intrigued by the cover.

Anyway I saw that there was a doc on zappa on Ch4 and thought I'd record it to see who this oddity was. I missed the first few mins and turned over to see the start of that video. The juvenile pissing about of the 1St minute held my attention and I thought ok..... Then it becomes clear that the zappa fella is conducting this chaos and they are all doing exactly what he wants. Ok probably just some avant garden stoners.
Then it changes and starts getting a bit more serious..... Leading into that drop as the baseline and jazz rhythm comes in.

My mind blew at that moment. What on earth was this?

Sounded like rock but not. Loads of brass which sounded great. Then it wind up again into his guitar solo. The remnants of my ignorance were shattered! This off kilter yet continuous highly distorted (I think you can actually hear the speaker cones distorting too) soloing was amazing. Now i know that solo is just classic zappa style he does it all the time. But the sudden jazz key changes and changing tempos just amazed me.

Of course I watched the rest of the doc, put Hot Rats on and that was it for me. I'd found nirvana!

Anyway, that single video opened my mind to
A. Things that are sometimes hard to listen to (Riley and glass avant garde on TV now as it happens)
B. Brass
C. Odd and offbeat rhythms.
D. Improvisation and jazz

Sheesh I'm rambling now. In fact this in probably best stuck in a new thread but I'll leave it here anyway. Arf Arf!!
