Very little worse than a drum solo imho
It's the best opportunity during a gig to go and have a piss and get another pint!

'a change of seasons' by Dream Theater. The acoustic intro and the first heavy riff section is good, the next twenty minutes are just total rubbish.

One I'd forgotten is "For Richard" by Caravan. An excellent track, but there's getting on for three minutes of very quiet music at the start of the track, followed by about nine minutes of instrumental at "proper" volume. So if it plays in the car, I have to turn it up to hear the quiet bit, then it goes normal and becomes too loud.

While trying to find it on youtube to confirm whether it's by Caravan or Can (I couldn't remember) this live version suggests that they don't bother with the start either: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4yNI0_2RNA - although much as I like the track, it does seem to be working up to finishing for about two minutes as well.

@droopsnoot

I think it might be this version you're referring to?

I'm amazed I've never heard of Caravan, given that I'm a fan of Yes, Floyd, Camel etc....

Something like that, that seems a bit longer than I had to edit down, and a little less of a difference in sound level. But it's ages since I edited it for the car. Maybe it was an album version, I can't remember where it came from. Egg City Radio perhaps.

I also recall seeing Metallica at Wembley touring the Black Album in 1991/2 (?).

EVERY SINGLE SONG they just went on hitting their instruments for about a minute after the song had finished, while we all applauded.

Got a bit boring after a while.

Like the Black Album, actually.
Get out for your last comment.

Oh, and the drum solo in the Motorhead set at the last Glastonbury they played. There was only thirty minutes of it shown on BBC TV, and almost half of it seemed to be taken up by a drum solo. Aren't most drum solos too long?
Less time for a quite obviously very ill Lemmy to be out in the sunshine. As much as I love Motörhead, I wished they had knocked it on the head earlier.

More heresy but:

Pink Floyd: Money (Live Version)

For reference see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NXBLxZcO2Q

Turned in to some kind of free-form extravaganza compared to the original album version. GET ON WITH IT mad

Though it pains me to say it, the last three or four Iron Maiden releases could all have done with a bit of a trim. As much as I enjoyed Book of Souls, there are tracks on there that could easily have four or five minutes lopped out of them and still probably be a bit too long. Can't decide whether it's laziness, self indulgence or maybe starting to run out of ideas.
Using a quote from another band "sad, but true". I put it down to Steve Harris and his ego (or his suffering as being a West Ham fan).

A Lars Ulrich drum solo maybe?
All drum solos are unlistenable imho.

I suggest watching Whiplash. It gave me a fresh appreciation for the drums.

You could try loading it into some sound editing software and giving it some serious compression.

Layla
I was going to say Layla as soon as I saw this thread. I only listen to the vocals and then tend to skip the song when it turns to an instrumental
The instrumental is the best bit imho!
Anything that involves not having to hear Clapton's (so-called) singing has to be the best bit

It's the bits between the guitar and drum solos I tend to find most boring, ie, singers.

I'm not a fan but I heard Bat Out of Hell the other night and it works well. It's a bit of a journey rather than a song, though, and I suppose you could split it into parts?

I didn't think of anything like that, and in truth it's a bit slow so I wasn't really missing it.

On that subject, but off-topic for the thread, have you any suggestions on "evening" out the sound levels on multiple tracks? I've ripped a load of music (by my standards at least) into MP3 or WMA format to play on my in-car player, but some are at much different levels to others. So I end up turning the player up to hear a track, then having to turn it back down again for the next one. It's not linked to music style - some of the heavier stuff needs more volume than some of the softer stuff.

I did think of cutting the tracks to CD using one of the packages that offers an option to level out sound levels, then re-ripping them back to MP3, but that sounds like a lot of work.

I totally agree.

long solos or repeated chord sections for no reason and a closing line of vocal intros as well as outros....

That said I love some of their earlier lengthy tomes - Rime for example is metal genius especially the live version

a few led zep tracks could do with being trimmed - when the Levee breaks.....jesus it broke 2 minutes in and you're still going...
