Agreed, Peter Gabriel is a great singer.

Some slightly left-field ones from me. As a professional singer myself, I think I like emotion rather than simply range. I will nominate Justin Currie (Del Amitri) and Jackson Browne.
Peter Gabriel has a great voice.
I know not all of their work would qualify as rock but-Thom Yorke.

Got to be a mention somewhere for Devin Townsend. Similar in some respects to Corey Taylor with a super heavy group (Strapping Young Lad) and more melodic solo work.

I recently discovered Townsend's work, and his vocal range is astonishing. Combined with his guitar work, which is all in what's called "Open C" tuning, he does create a unique sound; much of which I like.

As for other favourite "rock" vocalists:-

Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder
Robert Plant
Ian Gillan
Geddy Lee
David Coverdale
Bon Scott
Paul Rodgers

ETA : One of Townsend's best tunes:-

There are loads. One from the top of my head would be Chester Bennington. Surprised he hasn't come up. Definitely a voice that was as good on stage as it was from the studio.

Jared Leto is another with a great voice, Chris Cornell, Myles Kennedy, David Draiman to name a few more. Rock has some great voices.

Blimey! So many I've never heard of. They're all good singers rather than put -across-a-songers?

the one who surprised me was David Draiman - I do like Disturbed but kinda thought of him as 'ok', but then came his version of Sound of Silence. Man, that lad has some emotion he can convey!

We've mentioned RJD I'd also try for Klaus Meine here. Another vote for Lizzy Hale, I also do rate Amy Lee from Evanescence

I was just about to mention him. So instead I'll add...Jon Anderson of Yes.

A lot of good rock singers are probably not very good in the technical sense (mention no names (cough) Ian Anderson) but bring a certain 'something' to the pot.

That's it! In the technical sense. Exactly what I meant.

Plenty I'd agree with (Cornell, Hale, Patton to name a few) but a little surprised there's been no mention of the late Scott Weiland

Just as good live. Saw them in their prime at Brixton and a lot of improvisation without any drop in quality whatsoever. Excellent.

I think Corey holds a record for his range? Listen to Sic/Slipknot and Bother/Stone Sour back to back laugh I would nominate Marilyn Manson (in the good years when he was scary- Holywood, Mechanical Animals) and Robb Flynn (The Blackening, Unto The Locust) which I know are both controversial!

Definitely agree with Myles Kennedy having a mention, I hadn't paid him any attention when I heard Alterbridge, It wasn't until I heard him on Slash's solo album in 2010 that I suddenly sat up and took notice. Also, on the same album actually, what about Andrew Stockdale?

As far as older rockers go, Paul Rogers has to get a mention surely?

Skin from Skunk Anansie for me.
Can't remember his name at the moment, but the guy from Foxy Shazam.
Plus loads of the ones already mentioned.

And then you've got Ringo Starr, Jimi Hendrix, Jack Bruce, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roger Waters, Dave Cousins, Peter Hamill, Geddy Lee and David Surkamp.

Voices that either strip paint at 40 paces or can't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow but you can't imagine anyone else in their place.

Check out Ceekay Jones. He's a superb rock singer and does some other acoustic stuff too.

Let Me Sign is a great track he sings.

(and, a bit strange, but Robert Pattinson of the Twilight also sings a version of this song on Youtube and is brilliant).

that's exactly what I didn't mean. These are people who can put across a song but aren't technically good singers. I was suggesting a run down of good singers.

Phil Mogg from UFO, still sounds good today and shame he's calling it a day next year
Phil Lynott, really great vocals and live presence. Not sure how well his vocals would have aged but unfortunately we'll never know.
