New to this thread and not managed to catch up on every post, but I have a theory. I grew up in a Beatles household and for one stage in my career taught Music Technology at 6th form level - including a history of popular music module.

I used to advance a theory to my students that the Beatles invented Heavy Metal, and that Paperback Writer was the first ever heavy metal song. If you take all the distinctive characteristics of that style of music - the heavy distortion, repetitive riffs, bass and guitar in unison etc etc.

It’s incredible just how far ahead of their time they were.
Wasn’t Helter Skelter their first?

Or earlier, The Who’s ‘I can see for miles’

True, there was much friendly rivalry and competition between the two - and others.

Brian heard Rubber Soul and made Pet Sounds, Beatles heard that and came up with Sergeant Pepper, Stones heard that ... etc.
I don't think the Stones could be considered on the same planet as the Beatles or the Beach Boys.
Indeed.

But, to be fair, the Stones' influences were mainly Blues. Lennon and McCartney's musical taste was much wider, and they are on record stating that "Blackbird" was based on a cover of J.S. Bach's "Bouree" which they played at gigs occasionally in the early days to demonstrate they weren't just a pop outfit.

You are so right. beer
Well I only said they were competing, I didn't claim they had any chance of winning.

I wouldn't put the Beach Boys on the same planet as the Beatles.

The Stones on a different planet absolutely but then that would be appropriate as they were and are a very different band.

I think Pet Sounds ranks alongside the Beatles.

The Stones have always been a complete mystery to me. Don't rate them at all.

In matters of music, as in many others, I am happy to agree to disagree.
