I do get the impression that each of them is pretty darned good with their instrument, and googling the names above suggests that at least some of them can write too.

The combination, though, doth not float my boat.

I am quite happy, for balance, to post something I like for everyone else to laugh at if you'd like. I've long thought that everyone has awful taste in music, and included myself in that...

I suspect this is relevant to the OPs point. Analysis of music in the charts and use of repetition.

We're not here to laugh at tastes. Infact, theres
probably something modern decended from what you traditionally that you will also like.

Im still going to recommend that if people are convinced nothing new has talent, excitement or is boring, to go through the NPR tiny desk series. My highlights:

(and something older) https://youtu.be/eB4oFu4BtQ8

I'm one of the weirdos who likes new music more than old music.

That doesn't mean I don't like old music, I just tend to find my ears wear it out after so many listens.

I love the way the percussionists on NPR are barely touching their instruments. I have seen one where the drummer had a towel over the top of the snare. I can just imagine the sound recording engineer going "no, even quiet than THAT"

Audiotree also has some great stuff, this being a particular favourite

There are some amazing tiny desk videos....

I think this is my favourite, its the singer who sang the Narcos theme tune.

And another.... a bit easier on the eye then Rodrigo :-)

Yo-Yo Ma..... well, because the Cello is just about the best instrument there is.

I employ dozens of musicians every year, and can confirm that UK bods are generally considered the best in the world. (Jazz / USA excepted).

Having said that, I employ classically /jazz trained musos, not self styled pop ‘stars’, who generally have a very inflated opinion of their abilities. Singers being in a class of their own.

(I’ve been there and seen it many times).

Standards of musicianship in the UK have never been higher.

Check out Neal sight reading this: (Posted elsewhere on the forum, my apologies) >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y9JHUyap5g

No wonder he is sometimes flown to the USA to dep when a drummer can't make a gig.

ETA : Everyone else on the track was also sight reading.

I'm not saying my hearing is shot. But from the drum kit I'm mostly getting <hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss><bump><hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss><hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss><bump><hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss><hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss><bump><hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss>

It's like someone (in time) turning loud static on and off in a room where other people are playing music.

Enjoyed that

Very interesting scale choices on track #1; harmonic minor? phrygian dominant? bit of Byzantine thrown in? Some great bass lines as well

Well, since this thread is about lazy or talentless musicians today, I think we can say there's plenty of talent & endeavour out there, whether you like the genres or not. This band are unlike any other I know of. Five Dutch/Turkish kids & an English guitarist.taking seventies Turkish disco & folk tunes & rearranging them into psychedelic rock with funk overtones, with elan imo.

Well I've only listened to the first song so far, but if that's anything to go by will enjoy the rest when I return to it later, Drummer's a bit busy but there's nothing wrong with that. The electric bouzouki (if that's what it is) is an interesting sound. Couldn't hear the female vocalist, but she's decorative enough for it not to matter.

I'll give the rest of it a listen over breakfast.

I've only just dipped into this thread and am pleased I did, for the pointers towards modern stuff worth listening to, that I'd never heard of.

A common criticism in the thread has been of modern musicians playing only 4 chords and using repetitive lyrics. It's not a new phenomenon, for 50 years, that's been a winning formula for the legends that are Status Quo.

If you can write a song someones already humming halfway through the first time, it's a good thing. And it also keeps people like Tom Waits and Nick Cave feeling like a tonic rather than the norm.

To accuse Status Quo of using four chords ... is actually being a bit generous!

I saw her live on Wednesday & I'm delighted to report you don't know what you're talking about.

She must be pretty important to get Jonny Greenwood on guitar for her tongue out .
