Glastonbury 2020 ... now 2022

Time and again though you get people expecting performers to do something different at glastonbury (because 'it's glastonbury') to what they've been doing on tour and are disappointed (special guests apart).
It's a pretty obvious difference! A tour will be watched by fans of the artist who bought tickets to see them and know all/most of their material.Big festivals are full of people who have not necessarily come to see you, they have come to see a variety of bands and might not know all your material.
Glastonbury is one step further, it is full of people who didn't even know you were playing!
I am sure any big PMC fans loved it though.
He clearly knew what the crowd wanted (his comment about crowd lighting up with camera phones during the hits, none during solo stuff) but he decided to plough on. Fair enough, his call.

The same thing happened when macca played in 2004 - it was gonna be an all-beatles bangers set. I had to laugh when the matter was immediately settled - he opened with Jet.
(although looking back now at that setlist you might haver been happier with what he played that year)

And more. I wouldn't say I was big - an admirer perhaps. I never got around to making myself familiar with the beatles back catalogue (so don't be asking me which is their best) - like some Wings stuff. I was really torn with Roisin on West Holts and The Waterboys at the Acoustic and had a half a plan to skip off half way through but I ended up enthralled and the 3 hours flew by. The crowd response looked fantastic from where I was standing (especially after he brought Bruce on - a roller coaster thereafter) and feedback I've been seeing has been quite gushing

No criticism of you for not enjoying it - it never happens the same for everyone, especially at festivals for the reasons you mention and long may that be the case.
Did any of the home viewers think the macca live broadcast had poor sound btw? I've seen several reports of it. I watched it back on iplayer on saturday (same time different place) and it sounds great on my system - definitely a keeper. Just sayin

I would never criticise anyone for liking it disliking music or a performance, that would be ridiculous. It’s 100% subjective.
I like the Beatles and the well known Wings stuff and have no knowledge of his solo stuff.
I had reservations but was persuaded by my relative who knew the special guests. My choice, my mistake. Should have gone to the Waterboys which was plan A.
It was a brilliant Glasto, I have an amazing time and there are always surprises - a few negative but mostly always positive.
Will be there again next year

Pity there's no cameras at the acoustic. I went to my first glastonbury in 1990 because of The Waterboys. I was at a house party in Leicester drunkenly singing waterboys songs and some randoms, who were also fans, said 'you should come to glastonbury with us next week'. And that was that.
ps seen their new song? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnySBWJRxHo

I don't think The Wateroys played in 1990 but The Cure did - it was the year an air ambulance helicopter landed in the crowd.
The first time I saw The Waterboys was later the same year when me and the same miscreants who took me to glastonbury (and still good friends with now) got the bus down to see them in a big top on Highbury Fields in London. Great gig
Oops you said The Cult sorry misread

I'm a massive fan of James, have seen them countless times. Whenever I tell people they go "Oh Sit Down, Oh Sit Down" ... Tim Booth pretty much refuses to play that song nowadays, he's just sick of it.
Ditto Radiohead with The Bends.
Of course, less fanatical types just want the hits, so they understandably get a bit annoyed that it's not a greatest hits set.
A case of "you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time", I guess.

This has irritated me for a couple of years now, if they're going to film all of the other main stages, why not that? I saw Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott as my Friday night headliner, they were absolutely superb, what a setlist, alas the watching public at home don't get to see it.
https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/paul-heaton-jacqui-...
Ditto the stages that are filmed have some performances missing due to them being an 'early set'. I saw The Libertines on the Other Stage and Brass Against at West Holts, both were stand out performances that really deserve coverage yet are not on the iPlayer because they were an 'early set' - 1130hrs and 1345hrs respectively. Were the camera crew in Block 9 until the early hours or something?
Against popular opinion in NP&E I'm a fan of the BBC and the licence fee, but it just seems a bit crap to have all the tech there in situ but selectively miss some bits out because they are too early. It's not like they have a limited broadcast window on the iPlayer as they did when only broadcast on terrestrial TV.

I think the camera crews start work at 1.30 so anything before that doesn't get filmed - it's probably a staffing thing. I lamented it for Kikagaku Moyo on west holts - their final tour and only uk show

Get your point but not sure I agree with you.
Radiohead are a good example in fact, saw them on last tour - they played mostly the new album/s
Saw them at Glasto last time 2017 and they played lots of hits including Creep
https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/radiohead/2017/wort...
both brilliant, but tailored setlists
Tickets for 2023 go on sale in the first week of November

Didn’t get tickets for the first time since 2010, wasn’t too bothered as this year’s event was nowhere near as special as before, the long covid gap affected it I think, the crowd was very mainstream and the atmosphere was nothing like previous years, a lot of the sparkle that makes it so unique felt missing.
