IMO this is an area where the jazz talent simply kills the rock line-up.

Personally, I'd tie the vote between Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorius, followed closely by Scott LaFaro.

Honourable mentions to Ron Carter, Ray Brown, Stanley Clarke, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Blanton and Oscar Pettiford
100 agree.

Composition will have to go to Charles Mingus over Jaco. I have pretty much every single recordings of both these guys and Charles is just insane (and he was!! Lol ).

In the olden days, the bassist was usually the fat kid whose dad had a van. McCartney changed all that. No more just the root note of the chord for him!
Incidentally, it's interesting how many bassists are often the most musically literate and educated in the band. Andy Fraser, Entwistle, Jimmy Lea from Slade, etc etc.

I'm a big fan of many already mentioned but the first name that came to my head hadn't been - Dirk Lance.
Formally of Incubus, now doing some Pop stuff but has always had some funky lines.

Slightly off-tangent, vaguely on topic(sh) .....

I was watching Jools Hollands show tonight, and there was a London singer on, called Little Simz, doing a song called "Offence". Her music was vary vaguely slightly interesting, but I just absolutely loved the bass sound.

I'd love to know what the guys setup is. I googled to try and find out who he was; but to no avail.

Is there any remote chance that there might be someone who might have any idea, either who he might be; or what his kit is? You can see/hear it here, on the Beebs iPlayer, where it starts at 11:17:

They look like standard Jazz pickups; but any ideas on his amp, possible pedal, etc, etc? If I could find out who he is, I'd ask him

Sounds like he's just running it through a distortion pedal to me

...has anyone mentioned Bruce Thomas?

A very underrated player - his bass lines on Lipstick Vogue by the Attractions had me enthralled as a young lad and go me hooked on the instrument (though unfortunately I was never any good at it).

Me too, maybe with some phasing going on aswell.

Another name that popped into my head is Les Claypool from Primus - niche appeal but he has some awesome chops!

Which one of those is your favourite then, as per the thread title?

Gary is a serious player. I always think he looks like your unassuming neighbour who maybe has a ride-on lawnmower (or Hickok45). But when he plays, bloody hell.

Not just rock though and not just bass guitar. For many contemporary Western instruments, the best musicians are in the jazz field.

Anyway, my vote would go to Jeff Berlin because he is on an incredibly high level from both a technical and knowledge perspective. His knowledge of music and how that relates to his instrument is incredible and it shows in his improvisation.

Other honorable mentions would go to Anthony Jackson, Janek Gwizdala and Richard Bona.

I’ll confess I haven’t read the whole thread...Hooky, Jaco, Karen, Bernard Edwards, James Jameson, love em all but...

Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Arttractions) is probably the bassist I would most like to be able to play like. An underrated genius.

And that is why I should read the whole thread before commenting!
