I'll nominate Jessie J. I enjoyed "Price Tag" and bought her debut album on that basis.

Nails down a blackboard.
A bit like Mariah Carey in that she uses her vocal talents and skills to "show off" her range and technique and turned it into a singing style all by itself. Somewhat less successful than MC it has to be said.

Ian Brown is another funny one, his vocals are usually produced beautifully to match the music but if you listen to it through any reasonable headphones or speakers you can pick out how poor he is. Reed thin and nasally hardly covers it.

Curiously, before Noel got hold of Oasis Liam Gallagher copped his style.

I don't get the hate for LG's voice personally even if I do accept in his years of excess it was ruined by his habits, my goodness he could spoil an otherwise excellent gig.

Now he's living something resembling a cleaner lifestyle he's much better, if lacking some of the power of his youth. Back then, he was a force of nature and a genuinely excellent talent. I can accept that people can't separate the talent from the imbecile it emerges from mind you!

Sinatra was perhaps the most gifted 'interpreter of song' in popular music history. He recorded a great deal of material, some of it a lot better than others. It's worth bearing in my mind that he hated some of the later songs he became known for, in particular, 'My Way'.

There are many opinions about when he was at his peak, but to get an idea of just how great he was, check out 'Sinatra at the Sands'. The Count Basie orchestra and mind-blowing too, it's a truly great recording.

Bowie. Ruins everyone of his songs by sounding like a bad karaoke singer on them.

Also Sam Smith, such a nasally lazy singing voice that I think sounds terrible.

Some good songs by Sam Smith to be fair (mainly the remixes) but since he is no longer a male he can hand back his Best Male Artist award and go back to getting people to photograph him crying the fking wet lettuce.

Someone mentioned Jessie J - the do it like a dude was Ok but then when she went onto Pop stuff like Price Tag I agree it is not suited to her voice in my opinion.

I tend not to listen to Pop/mainstream much anyway.

Nobody has me reaching for the Off button like Springsteen. A mediocre song writer and an appalling vocalist.

The thread has expectly morphed from people who can't hold a note, are flat and out of tune, to "people's singing voices I don't like" hehe

Just had Spice Girls on the radio and Geri is flat on the opening line of the song (and throughiut the rest of the song!) but she still "made it".

Someone mentioned Florence and the Machine earlier. I don't think she can sing either, or she has real off days.

Her performance at 2010 Glastonbury was utterly terrible, particularly on Rabbit Heart. She's just shouting for some of it.

What's odd is I have a real tin ear, and can enjoy all music even whilst recognising the singing is dire or the drummer is crap. However my wife (who can play by ear) can't listen to, for example, the Stone Roses as she says Ian Brown's singing is, to her, like someone pulling their fingernails down a blackboard.

Yep, overproduced music and a terrible voice. I don’t know whether him or the Bee Gees would be the worst for me.

+1

I've had the misfortune to witness The Killers live on 3 occasions and it's not just the singing, none of the band can play either. It's was like a really bad cover band each time. Either they don't care or they were off their nut each time. More likely their recording engineers and producers were geniuses....

In overall terms, haven't heard anyone as bad as Katy Perry when she's trying to sing live

In actual person, I don't think I've seen anyone worse than Debbie Harry/Blondie at Rockness circa 2010

Bruce Springsteen, I don’t dislike his music but it is good despite his vocals not because of them.
Been saying this for years. Good songwriter, mediocre performer. As evidenced by the fact that ever single cover version of one of his songs is an improvement on the original.

Very.

He is absolutely tremendous live. You'll rarely see a man and band that captivates their audience any more. Even people with little interest in Springsteen are surprised how good he is live.

2.5-3 hour sets and he holds the crowd the entire time. It's not like a lot of bands where the crowd loses attention waiting on certain songs, or can pick when it's time for the toilet.

The dislike music threads on here end up with calling out just about everyone. It's all a matter of personal taste and opinion, but a lot of them are very strange.

That's a good shout, but I think I'd perhaps put him in the Dylan category as someone who is technically hopeless and yet adds something hard to define despite being all over the place.

I was going to mention both of these, just for one particular aspect of their vocal performance - they both do that awful up and down thing where another vocalist would have held a note, and it makes me think they do it because they just can't hold the note. Not the only two to do it, by any means.

Lots of modern pop vocalists appear to be quite good singers, but of course I only hear what gets played on the radio, and presuming that auto-tune technology has moved on from Cher, there could be all sorts of assistance going on that I'm not aware of. I heard a few solo things by Mel C (mentioned earlier) and thought her voice sounded pretty good. On the odd occasion a Spice Girls track is played now, I can't tell which one is singing at any given time.

I’ll take your word on Springsteen live. I’d soon push nails into my arms than go to one of his gigs.
