Good friends of mine opened for Tom and his band at the Union Chapel London back in 2017.
Who was that?
Lowri Evans and her other half Lee Mason. They're bigger in their native Wales than in England but they do both English and Welsh music. Got quite a few albums now. Lovely couple and talented musicians. She has a pretty unique voice.

Frightened Rabbit.

Scott Hutchison was a brilliant songwriter alas unable to shake off his mental health issues, culminating in his suicide as foretold on ‘Floating In The Forth’ on their magnificent Midnight Organ Fight album.
I saw Frightened Rabbit at a small intimate gig in Southampton a few years back and they were brilliant. Shame he couldn't deal with his mental health issues.
A massively underrated band.

Scott was a great guy.

I still remember the day and reading the comments about the last sighting of him was nearby the forth bridge. We all knew what was coming.
absolutely agree. ‘midnight organ fight’ is a wonderful album, it’s an album I just keep returning to.

I feel very sad about how it all ended, now a lot of musicians have fallen that way. but something about scott has really stuck with me. I really hope he found his peace.
I feel the same, it's good to see his brother Grant carrying on with the Tiny Changes charity in Scott's name.

I met the band in 2009 at the Ben & Jerry's Summer Sundae on Clapham Common, they played a mid-afternoon slot then said from the stage "come and have a beer with us after the show" so a load of fans got to hang out with them, it was really nice, they were very happy for indie nerds like me to ask them loads of questions they'd probably answered a thousand times before. I got a photo with the Scott, a fond memory of the day for me.

I'd never heard of the Dakota Hotel Edinburgh before he went missing, but as soon as he did I figured there would only be one outcome cry

I know it's a bit morbid, but I'd like to go there, pay a visit to his last journey, and visit 'Scott's Bench' that some fans have funded in Kelvingrove Park. There's one across the pond in Transmitter Park, Brooklyn too. On my bucket list to pay both a visit.

The Bathers - just reissued three albums on vinyl.

Kelvingrove Baby
Lagoon Blues
Sunpowder

The best kept secret in Scottish Music - really shouldn't be though.
Just giving these a listen on Apple Music now, thanks for the tip. I've got a bit of a thing for Scottish bands, so these are a welcome addition, a pal of mine had recommended them to me years ago but I just hadn't got round to listening to them.

Pleasure - they're good. He has an unusual voice, and has clearly had girlfriend issues... hehe

Kelvingrove Baby gets under your skin - I keep coming back to it.

I agree with those who have suggested Thunder.

I would also add Drugstore. Awesome live but the last time I saw them, there was only a handful of people there.

I feel very old not knowing a lot of these names.

The Flaming Groovies said of themselves "they should have been bigger than the Stones"

I agree

I’m going to say Ash. Rocky enough to be considered rock, but light enough and catchy enough for the radio. Absolutely stupendous live.
I appreciate they aren’t that small or unheard of, but....
Ash were really big in the mid to late 90s, might not have been the biggest band compared to oasis, blue etc but had a fair bit of success compared to a jj72 who I think should have been bigger than they were

One of my favourite bands - it was only the 4th album where the quality dipped, bit the first 3 are amazing. The drummer is incredible if you listen to what he does on a lot of their tracks. The only reason I didn't mention them in this thread is because their brand of post rock probably wasn't ever going to be mainstream!

oh mate, it's the drummer that got me!.. i really like the whole ambience and chord movements but the guitar playing is generally less involved than what i normally listen to....agree that the first 3 albums are the best...

Does anyone recall The O Band (aka 'A band Called O')?

...talented and musical, I always though they would become big but they faded away

Also 'The Babys' never seemed to achieve what they might have

Has anyone mentioned porcupine tree yet?

Id heard if them but never listened to them.

Should have been much bigger then they were, Although I suppose a band with Steven Wilson in was always going to suffer from his itchy feet and desire to move on

At least Richard Hawley went on to become more successful. Not generally my C of T, but we saw him on tour last year and he was phenomenally good. Probably in my Top 10 gigs...
Was going to say something similar.
Richard Hawley is fantastic, and clearly had much more to offer than the rest of the Longpigs.

CNN or XC-NN, great tunes from Tim Bricheno after being removed from All About Eve, and Dave Tomlinson has a great voice. Had a few minor hits but never fulfilled their potential.

They then formed Tin Star, who also had a few hits before fizzling out.

Splitting up with Julianne Regan and leaving All About Eve was a terrible career move.

Has anyone mentioned "Turbo Dad" a Merseyside 4 piece from 2004.
Or that 80s Coventry band. "Ziggy stardust and the spider's from mars say spit on me Johnny"

Or London Beat

Or the Jesus and Mary chain
