Any other Petty fans here?

For those not in the know. Wildflowers is Tom Pettys second solo album produced with Rick Rubin in 1994 and it's regarded as his creative peak. In fact, he was on such a roll that he recorded enough material for a double album. In the end, the album was shortened to a single CD. The double-album re-release project was supposed to happen in 2019 on the 25th anniversary but Pettys death in late 2017 plus legal squabbles delayed it's release.

Still awaiting on my £150 5CD box set from America but I got the digital copies via email a couple of days ago. It's just utterly brilliant! So happy to hear some new Tom Petty music biggrin

Petty fan?

Oh yes. Ever since I first watched them - I was working at Oxford Polytechnic when in March 1980 I got wind they were going to perform at the Poly on their short UK 'Damn The Torpedoes' tour. I wasn't sure it was correct at first but as soon as I found out after Hammersmith Odeon they'd be here, I volunteered as member of staff to be around on the sidelines, anytime a group was on I liked (in this case, watch TP&TH up close for free!).

The whole concert was filmed by the BBC for Rock Goes to College. Think the DJ who introduced them was Pete Drummond - the following video clip is of 'Refugee', which was a favourite song at that time. I was hooked by Mike Campbell's guitar playing (I was a Fleetwood Mac fan from the first incarnation in the late 60s, and it's like fate that Campbell is now guitarist in FM). I had Refugee as the single, but the wailing guitar piece at the end when played live is not on the single. I was hooked.

They, over the years, just got better and better - absolutely superb live band, better than on record imo. I think I have everything they've ever recorded except the new Wildflowers thing.

The 2012 Isle of Wight Festival saw them on top form.
Just a glimpse...

Was at his last concert in the UK before he died (a couple months later on 2 Oct), the one at Hyde Park on 9 July 2017.
This bit of mobile footage is quite amusing when he goes through the history of the band, prior to performing his old hit with Stevie Nicks.

(there were loads of cameras filming this event but I've never seen anything professional released.

I got into Petty through the Wilburys having been a George Harrison and Beatles fan since 13. I listened to “Anthology, Through The Years” whilst driving at 16/17 years of age. Tom Petty was and will be a huge part of my life. So much so that I got so fed up of waiting for him to come to the UK I flew to New York in 2008 to watch them.

I almost feel embarrassed saying it but the first bars of “You Wreck Me” was probably the biggest Adrenalin rush of my life. That’s why music is so amazing smile

I did 6 shows total.

2008 - Madison Square Garden and Buffalo
2010 - Toronto ACC and Buffallo
2012 - Isle Of Wight Festival
2017 - Hyde Park (diamond circle wink )

thanks for the 2017 video!
I went to Knebworth in 1978 to see Genesis.
Tom & the heartbreakers were on the bill....they were by far the best act I saw that day

From the first few notes of American Girl.
(And retrospectively through Mudcrutch).
Tom was utterly superb.
