Rush…love or hate?
Discussion
My favourite band alongside Yes. Got into them in the early 80s with Exit Stage Left, Broons Bane, the Trees, Xanadu being a particular highlight of that album.
Everything from Fly by Nght to Signals are classics. I think they began to alienate a lot of fans with the synth laced stuff of the 80s but personally I liked it. The 90s and post millennium albums were a bit hit and miss although revisiting these after Pearts death reveals some underated material. Glad I had the privilege of seeing them 6 times from the 80s into the 2000s.

Absolutely brilliant band - A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres are probably my favourites.
I get the Geddy Lee voice thing but I soon accepted it - remember listening to them under the bedclothes on Metro Radio on a Sunday night!
A fellow Hot ‘N’ Heavy listener from the 80s, I assume?I get the Geddy Lee voice thing but I soon accepted it - remember listening to them under the bedclothes on Metro Radio on a Sunday night!

Summer 1986 I was on board a car being ragged around an airfield on a Saturday night (we'd put the gliders to bed). This thing was being cornered on its doorhandles with Power Windows on the stereo. It was about the greatest thing I'd ever heard (at the time) and I couldn't wait for Monday to go and buy a copy. I like all Rush but as with a few others here my favourite period was roughly Permanent Waves through to Test for Echo, with Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire all high points for me. Although I liked the synth albums I did think Alex Lifeson's guitar was too low in the mix, some of his fabulous playing was almost buried.
Lucky enough to see them live 4 times. Alex's 'Victor' album and Geddy's 'My Favourite Headache' are good solo efforts too.

They have their moments...
One memory is I think the back cover of the lp record 2112. They are all sporting gigantic flared trousers.
By the CD release pic seems to have been blown up and fogged arounded the edges to avoid showing
the ludicrous pantaloons.
They were such great players that I wish they would one time just try a different sound. Too late now.
Lots of lyrics about inequalities and saving us from doom. Alongside others with grab grab grasp everything as you only have a short time.
All a bit confused Ayn Rand. Bit like she was.

Their later stuff is nothing like the early stuffOne memory is I think the back cover of the lp record 2112. They are all sporting gigantic flared trousers.

Good musicians, and i don't mind a couple of their earlier tracks - but i went to see them live in around 2007 at Newcastle Arena (someone had dropped out so there was a spare ticket going begging).....i watched about 10 minutes and thought fook this, and went back to the bar instead!
Love Rush!
Coincidentally came up in a conversation I was having a couple of days ago, about lyrics that we've always enjoyed, but become much more meaningful and poignant as we get older. A big one for me is:
Summer's going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older
Loved it as a kid. Hits me a bit harder now I'm getting on a bit, and time seems to be flying by......

I saw Rush a few times in the 80s and then again on the R30 tour. Like many others they lost me after about 1985 but the R30 concert at the NEC was great. Playing the old stuff ? Great ! Playing the new stuff ? Off to the bar !
Drunken YouTube evenings have to include La Villa. It’s the law.
Off topic, but my other drunken YouTube favourite is this. Can’t think why.
