Gig plans - 2023
Discussion
off to the Roundhouse tonight to see the support act!
Yazmin Lacey is supporting Dave Okumu, her debut album came out a couple of months ago and imho is brilliant; so when they announced her as support, with no other upcoming dates i booked up.
Main act should be quite interesting too; quite political/racially aware with a hint of Massive Attack/Young Fathers about the content.

Updates from me.
Lathums - Polar bear Hull, nice little intimate gig but caught covid!
Lathums, Manchester Albert hall, daughters 16th birthday. So so gig, nice venue, awful crowd.
Nick Mohammed, Leeds varieties (clearly not music), fantastic night, thoroughly enjoyed.
Yard act, Manchester Albert hall
Yard Act - Brudenell Social, Leeds, Thursday night of the weeks residency, support is Harry Hill, randomly.
Pulp, Bridlington Spa
Blur, Newcastle O2
Razorlight, The enemy, Tom Meighan, Space, Lottery Winnners. Askern Music festival.
Lathums / Lottery winners, Brid Spa
Reytons, Hull bonus arena

Off to see the Manic Street Preachers for the tenth time )15th June) at one of my favourite little venues, the Bath Forum.
Small, intimate and eight minutes from me on the train (+ a 5 minute drive at my end, and a 5 minute walk at the other).
Bit of an odd one as they don't look to have an album release this year and to my knowledge, this is the only non-festival gig they are playing.

missed the tix for that, was stuck in a meeting and then all gone!Small, intimate and eight minutes from me on the train (+ a 5 minute drive at my end, and a 5 minute walk at the other).

good venue size for them.
Tried and failed to buy a ticket for Blur at one of the warm-up shows announced this week. I've only ever seen them in arenas and outdoors and would have loved to have seen them somewhere smaller. Never mind.
On the positive front, I have booked for The Go! Team at the Roundhouse next February (seems a bit early for a new Gig Plans 2024 thread). I saw them last month (for the 5th time) and they really are one of my favourite live bands.
On the negative side, yesterday's train strike announcements have given me a problem for travelling to see The Goa Express in May (ironic given that the band is named after an express railway service).
Suede at Eastbourne Winter Gardens is a possible if I can make the date work (a Saturday in December and my wife already has something in the diary for us!).
The Manics at Bath Forum will be great. Would have like to have gone to that if I'd known about it in time.

Random selection coming up…
Steel Panther with Winger as support at Manchester Academy …then an unexpected Heaven 17 show at my local venue Buckley Tivoli in mid June. End of that week Pet Shop Boys in Liverpool.
July is Def Leppard and Motley Crue outdoors at Lytham Festival.
Eclectic mixture and mulling over Public Image Ltd again at Buckley Tivoli in September.

I'm finally off to see The Zombies tomorrow night in New Brighton. I booked my ticket in January 2020. These blokes are closer to 80 than 70 - they could have popped off in those 3 and half years !
Also, saw The John Martyn Project last week in Liverpool. Whilst they were very good, it just somehow wasn't very good.

Just managed to get Lewis Capaldi tickets for his acoustic tour. Happy with that as it sold out in moments. 24th May
History of Drum and Bass last month with an orchestra, that was a blast. Went with my daughter who enjoyed it too despite not really knowing any of the originals, they've all been sampled in the music and DJs she now listens to.
Started at 6, finished at 10 so home in time for Match of the day , a cup of tea and rest my feet. Perfect
Artic Monkeys too at the end of the month

booked a couple more things recently...
Yazmin Lacey at Village Underground (not until December) - very good new British Soul/Jazz/Blues singer
The Cinematic Orchestra are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Man With A Movie Camera at Royal Festival Hall; jazzy electronica at its finest (if you believe such a thing exists)
Beverley Knight at bath Forum in October - very versatile and excellent singer. Ranging from her own chart stuff through to work shes done in musicals over the past 20 odd years. puts on a good show
tickets for Field Day for the electronic line up - Aphex Twin, Bonobo, John Hopkins
Richard Ashcroft doing an outdoor gig in July
Hacienda Classical at Kew in July the week before Ashcroft - fingers crossed for good weather for both

Hacienda Classical
WTF? Happy Mondays, New Order etc put to classical music??What does anyone think they're gaining from such an experience?
This event, whether at something summery and open air in the summer, or at the Royal Albert Hall in the winter is something that I really enjoy with a gang of likeminded mates. it's just 1 of literally dozens of gigs I go to.
Each to their own but if you haven't tried these or aren't a 55 year old who has been there and done it all in the day (and survived to tell the tale); then you probably won't get or appreciate it. If you have and still didn't enjoy it then i suppose 'each to their own' covers it.
Happy Mondays aren't on the playlist, which is predominantly club/house and this is one of the few places you'll actually get to see Peter Hook play. New Order have been st live for years anyway so this wont be any worse!
I'm 59, live in south Manchester/Cheshire and spent every Saturday night for about 4 years in the Hacienda. I can't imagine anything worse than seeing poorly rendered orchestral versions of old Hacienda classics. Nostalgia's great, but some people are a little too desperate. See also 'classic Ibiza' at the Arena. Embarrassing.

like I said "each to their own", but thanks for your opinion and I get it; you're not a fanEdited by westberks on Tuesday 9th May 07:45

Yeah sure I didn't mean to press my point too hard, sorry. There's a number of these 'classical interpretation' gigs cropping up, to me they're an ersatz version of tunes I wasted my late teens and early twenties to and...to be frank...some of the music isn't even close to the original. Still, whatever floats your boat etc.Edited by westberks on Tuesday 9th May 07:45
