Gig plans - 2023
Discussion
Måneskin in Manchester this coming Tuesday. A band I'd never heard of until a friend who is a big fan introduced me. Not my usual cup of tea, but they are talented for sure and have some great tracks.
Should be a good night, even if we're travelling up from Bristol and the trains cost a bomb.

manage to snag 2 tickets to see Sault on Thursday. For those saying 'who?' that is a very fair question.
i've no idea.......
a collective of British soul artisits who haven't revealed their identity, have released 7 albums (5 on 1 day a year ago), only have 7 posts on insta in total, 4 of which related to this gig.
only said it was happening in December a week ago. said tickets would go on sale this morning for Thursday without prior warning of venue and sold out in about 5 minutes.
So i'm off to Drumsheds in North London on Thursday and have no idea what to expect
Interested to hear what this was like. I heard about the gig and marked it down as one that would be impossible to buy a ticket for, so didn’t even bother looking into it any further. I’ve heard quite a bit of them on 6Music over the last couple of years and been impressed. I had no idea that they had released 7 albums though.i've no idea.......

the gig was spectacular; like nothing I've ever witnessed (50 plus gigs per year to refer to)
had my concerns as it was in Drumsheds, a former IKEA turned rave warehouse with a 15k capacity...
they turned it into, for want of a better term, a huge art installation.
went in via the loading docks in a mocked up storage area, via a living/kitchen and through a fridge door, into a mirrored gallery area with their album artwork and eventually into the main room....
4 separate stage areas, subsequently filled with a mini orchestra, 50+ choir, glass booth for some of the band and then a huge stage runway for the dancers (of which there were probably 30)
SAULT themselves maintained a degree of anonymity by either wearing masks, costumes, or being behind screens whist the dancers did their thing.
probably 3,000 tix sold and given the scale of the production i doubt they made, or planned to make, a penny.
an absolute gamechanger for me and one of those that you can say you were there; it will have that ridiculous status attached to it.
people were complaining about the £99 ticket price when it was announced, if they'd asked for another £99 on the way out I'd have offered more.

Nice one. Thanks for the review. It does indeed sound spectaculardreadful and I will try a bit harder next time (if indeed there is a next time).
Apologies for that. Anyway - Slipknot @ Co-op Live next December.
I must have missed those Slipknot dates

Saw Ocean Colour Scene in Norwich last night. Cracking gig, very accomplished band, nice bit of banter. Sold out so hot and sweaty!
We were at Ocean Colour Scene in Hammersmith last night. Was a fantastic show and Steve Cradock was brilliant
Paul Weller came on stage and joined in for 2 songs too which was fantastic!

Almost ruined by a group of people who wanted to chat all the way through. Two of whom had their back to the stage and were 'catching up'. I asked them if they wouldn't mind catching up in the bar. Knocked the shine off it a bit as I couldn't quite get far enough away from them to tune out their shouting chat.

Went to see them in Wolverhampton on Friday. One of the best gigs I've been to for a long time. Sound was spot on and the set list was as brilliant as you'd expect. Just a really happy, nostalgic night out.

Those s are the absolute pits - I had it at a Sleep Token gig back in January and asked them the same question, they didn't like it, but it did at least work. We were lucky, no chatters near us, but we've had them in the past.
Saw Leftfield at Kentish Town on Saturday, last gig of the year for me after a pretty healthy number of gigs in 2023.
They managed to just pip Suede (at Southampton in March) to gig of the year for me, they were just immense and whole crowd was totally into it. No mobile phones, idiots loudly "catching up", insta opportunities or anything , just a perfect gig by a great live band with an awesome sound system.
Looking forward to 2024 and year 42 of gig going, should be some crackers amongst them.

was meant to be at this but sold tix as it was my anniversary and don't think GF would have appreciated that for our 'special' night out. Picked up a last minute ticket for QOTSA at Bournemouth... another sad sack flying solo - so Miocene if you fancy a beer/partner in crime, send us a message.
Bit gutted recently, missed Will Haven, Electric Wizard and Chat Pile - will miss Decapitated and Sleaford Mods in December as have works Xmas bash!
Has anyone seen British Lion (Steve Harris from Maiden) live - playing Bournemouth in January, but unsure...
I can only apologise, completely missed this, but I hope you had a great time at the gig!Bit gutted recently, missed Will Haven, Electric Wizard and Chat Pile - will miss Decapitated and Sleaford Mods in December as have works Xmas bash!

As presumably you're local to me (I live where electric wizard are from) and saw Will Haven the last couple of times they played in Bournemouth, so sounds like we have similar tastes!
Give us a shout if you are stuck alone for a gig beer buddy in future though!
QOTSA were immense and I recommend catching them to anyone that has never seen them before, ending on Song For The Dead could have been written for me as I was dead centre a few rows from stage in the crush.
Support groups were alright, Deep Tan are a out and out lesbian art school quirky post-punk outfit (male drummer was a stand-in) - not really destined for greatness - and for me the sound was awful - think the speakers diverted sound to sides missing the front centre... initially I thought they were just tuning up!
The Chats were really energetic Aussie punk band, great as a beer induced show, but to me their thick accents I think restrict them to a semi-comedy type act, but they are real shout along group and a lot of fun!
Anyhow, enough wittering, I am calling it quits for 2023, going to 2024 thread as first gig ticket has been acquired.
went a bit seasonal and took half the family to the Royal Albert Hall for the London Community Gospel Choir show.
I'm not remotely festive but my parents and very close aunt & uncle used to do the choir nights. Well uncle is no more and dad is housebound, so I treated the other 2 to seats in a box along with niece, GF, PA and a few mates.
they all enjoyed it, which was the main point and given its soulful leaning I also felt a little Christmassy too.
1 thing left in 23, a lunchtime gig at Ronnie Scott's on the 29th; just some random jazz standards with lunch to break up the days off.
