Pretty much any bassline by John Myung of Dream Theater (& John Petrucci should also be commended here for some stunning guitar-work). Much as they're a very 'marmite' band, they're one of the most technically brilliant and creative bands I've ever listened to.
I disagree sir, I think DT are one of THE worst bands ever. Brilliant musicians on their own, but they have NO idea how to put a good melody together.
No, they're great! If prog isn't your bag you won't like it. Try "A Change of Season" or "Images and Words" - yes there's the usual prog widdle widdle, but some great melody writing too. Also one of the best live bands I've ever seen smile

I enjoy some prog, my dad is professor prog. He drives me insane with Genesis and stuff (I cannot stand Genesis!). I don't mind Yes, Marillion, Camel and a few others though. As for DT, has anyone seen them attempting to cover Cemetary Gates by Pantera? BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAH!

Nick, that was kind of my point. They're technically brilliant and creative, but there's a reason why they're not massively popular. They're also severely let down by James LaBrie's vocals, he's not at the same level in his field as they are in theirs.

When I first heard Dream Theater, I hated it. After a few listens through, I understood the brilliance and skill in their playing. I wouldn't choose to listen to it because I like it, I listen because I can respect it.

Some of their songs ARE complete crap although Octivarium was a move more toward 'normal' melodies and song structure. I'm off to see them at Wembley Arena in October, having seen them at the Hammersmith Apollo a couple of years back.

ETA: Check out Liquid Tension Experiment, it's basically DT without LaBrie. It's also how Jordan Rudess came to be in DT - now that guy can f*cking play keyboard (although he struggles to look 'rock' whilst playing..!) It's easy with a guitar or drums.. laugh)

Labrie couldn't sing it, and they got Mustaine on to play the solo, but he fecked it up badly.

I can't believe we've made it to 2 pages without mention of Primus!! How about 'Tommy The Cat' or 'My Name Is Mud'?

Didn't know that DT had covered 'Cemetery Gates', don't think I want to hear that. Still it does give me an idea for a thread...

I also really like Flea's jaunty playing on Alanis Morissette's You Oughta Know. Sounds like it might be on a fretless, and acts as a great counterpoint to the melody.

yes

Proved by the amount of times it's been sampled.

I think Passion / Gat deCor is in with a shout too.

I'm finding it hard to list a load of Rage Against the Machine songs, but the bass is too prominent to not be considered a major part of the song. In all of the best Rage songs, the bass is used for a lot of the best bits...

A few songs from the first Queens of the Stone Age album had great basslines too, I think that the bass is probably what made the first album for me.

And man, Hysteria, top-notch bass-action!!
