Travelling Without Moving by Jamiroquai!

And the Lamborghini Diablo SE30 accelerating away at the start of the song fits in perfectly round here!

Peg's great, by Steely Dan with Chuck Rainey on bass.

"Sorrow" by Pink Floyd: the slow intro. Who else uses piano strings on a guitar?
Play it loud and shake the windows.

I agree, it is great, but bass line?

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain.
Where would F1 be now if it weren't for that bass line in the middle.

Faith No More - We Care a Lot or Falling to Pieces

Don't know if it counts as a bassline, but I get wood every time I hear the intro to Massive Attack - Angel. Now that's bass.

Jack Bruce - various Cream tracks, especially White Room and Sunshine of your Love.

Noel Redding - too many tracks to list. Favourite probably Hey Joe.

P.S I'm not a bassist

IMHO it still all goes back to Jaco... for me he was the first and best, and none that I know of that have followed compare. There are lots of great rock bass players, but great jazz players are very, very rare. Most of his early work - both solo and with Weather Report is simply mind boggling. Not just technically (for there are some that can mimic his style), but *off the scale* original.

He was also a monumental pain in the arse, and I take comfort in that wink

ETA - any bass players who are not afraid to get depressed by this guy's ability and haven't heard him, should buy this:

...and as for great basslines - look no further!

Can't be arsed looking to see who played bass in this but it's always stuck in my head.David Byrne, Angels.I like how at parts the bass has nothing to do with driving the song at all,it just accompanies the rest of the instruments, then it cuts in and drives the song, then just accompanies theother instruments loosely again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDcIXHIQUpQ

Even more interesting from Wiki:

"Flea, from the band Red Hot Chili Peppers, played the bass on the song, former Peppers member Dave Navarro was on the guitar, and current Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins played percussion." Impressive line-up!

Not a bass player or a Bee Gees fan, but shurely "Stayin' Alive" has the coolest bass line ever?

Billy Ocean - Stay the Night. Now I hate dancing, but that riff makes even me want to get up and boogie (extremely poorly). Just wish I could find it online somewherefrown
