Having seen the drummer that Korn drafted in to assist with their most recent album (on the accompanying DVD), and then watched a few of his clips on YouTube, I'd have to add Terry Bozzio to the list.

In his day Phil Collins was pretty handy with the drum sticks.

Just because he started making total crap masquerading as music later on shouldn't detract from that.

Another vote for Neal Peart of Rush, BTW.

IMO I think Ian (Rush) is top notch,

But saying that, watch anyhting of Nicholas Barker (From bands such as Old Man's Chils, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth) or "Trym" from Emperor and Zyklon..

Taking of people who've played with Sting, i've always rated Abe Laboriel.

Has anyone mentioned Mike Bordin who has played for numerous bands, IE Faith No More, Black Sabbath, etc.

Also Fyffe Ewing who was the original drummer for Therapy? Saw them play once many moons ago and he was absolutely amazing.

As a drummer myself I'm most impressed by jazz drumming which is a far more technical discipline than just keeping beat behind the band.

IMHO the best cross over drummer was Jimmy Chamberlin ex of the Smashing Pumkins.

Vinnie Collaiuta (sp), both for his Zappa and Sting years. Terry Bozzio for some of Zappas best bits. Saw Peart in Toronto couple of weeks back, easily the best at the moment imho. Copeland in Cardiff last week wasn't up to his former best, though he had a huge influence on me when learning. Billy Cobham was excellent recently in Swansea. Has anyone mentioned Dave Weckl? Phil Collins Genesis years were superb. Bonham gets my best ever vote, right foot and all that.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Dave Abruzzese eek

Ex Pearl Jam (they went a bit pants after he got the boot) and the reason I started playing the drums. Here's a tribute to him off Youtube

Best drummer's a no brainer - Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins. I think he's won every poll I've ever seen and he's utterly awesome on the drums. Yes, he's technically good, but he also really knows how to write decent drum parts for songs that add to the songs tremendously.

I always thought Neil Peart was 'the man' until I heard Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree.

Apparently Neil Peart must agree somewhat as Porcupine Tree featured heavily in the warm up and interval music on the recent Rush tour.

Q: How do you know when a drummer is at your front door?

A: He knocks 4 times but doesn't know when to come in!
