A musician can always be a DJ but a DJ is'nt always a musician.
would you call Moby a musician?

if so, he cant beatmix but tries and tries and well you get the picture.

splitting hairs I know, but not all producers can DJ.

if you are talking chris moyles then yes, anyone can pretend to be a cocky gobshite with no musical talent, i dont think we are talking mainstream commercial radio DJ's though.

So you go into a book shop, buy the top ten best sellers, take them home, cut some of the pages out of a couple, glue them together, take some other pages, photocopy them 100 times and stick them to the other pages...

That would make you a writer would it?

yes

if you add text to join each of the pages from each seperate book so the whole re written book makes sense whilst keeping the same story.

yes. (and that would be FAR more difficult to do than just write a book, no?)

can i ask a question, can you name some DJ's for us ?

Yes I can, but it's irrelevant really.

I'm not getting into DJ Top Trumps with you.

I obtained the book "How to DJ for Dummies"

Interesting statement 1 - If you practice beatmatching for two hours a night, then after a week you will be better than 75% of gigging DJs. That made me chortle.

Sasha ,whoever he is, is towted throughout as the absolute shiniest example of the DJ-ist. Must have a look for some of his stuff somewhere.

yeah he's a propper one!

listen to the rennaisance classics mix he did, outstanding, all studio mixed but it is an all time great.

also northern exposure 1

and fundacion NYC is also very well done but you might have to listen to it a few times to get into it (thats what most people say)

edit to add- you have to listen to what a DJ is doing to the music though, not just listen to the tracks. try and spot where they are adding things what they have changed etc once you have worked it out you can really appreciate what they are doing.

most people cant be bothered and just listen to the music.

Touchy! Are you a failed musician perchance? I would have thought it is quite simple really. But just for you, why not ask yourself this easy question - Do they play a musical instrument (or sing) or not?

If you have trouble interpreting the answer, please let me know.

have a listen to anything by "Anthony Rother" its a bit indie orientated electronic dance.

hes very good though, DJing and producing. one of my favs is "father" I say a bit, go preview the album "we are punks" its a few years old but was one of the first to start the crossover to indie style vocals.

also U.N.K.L.E - DJ james lavelle's producing name, the album Never, Never land is ace, "reign" or "invasion" are both in my all time top 20, although war stories is more indie guitar based but im not really to into that one.

yes the propper ones do, sorry for seeming flippant before but i doubt you understand the difference from a guy who plays records and a propper DJ.

search for a isrealian DJ called "moshic" he arranges singers on stage with him, whilst mixing his own tracks live using several sources, he is basically the complete band apart from the singers when he DJ's.

i honestly dont think you understand that things have moved on some what from the times of Tony Blackburn, pop pickers, and thats why I asked for proof!

Ta for that, I will try and get hold of some of those. Thanks again.

Whatever side you take re the various ongoing discussions, as a self confessed failed musician, the basic virtual mixing console and effects (Traktor and BCD3000) have breathed new life into my musical aspirations. I actually want to perform again.

Now that I have the required ammo, I will go listen with my own ears and make my own mind up. cheers.

good on ya!

have a look at ableton live also wink

traktor is a great little program, as is serato scratch but ableton live is the next step after that, you can controll and manipulate all the paramiters of the music and it gives you far more controll than the other programs, although it is ALOT easier to learn if you have had a play with tractor or scratch first it gives you more of the producer options so you can make the tracks your own by screwing them about, adding synths, record guitars into it, basically anything you want, either real time or pre recorded using envelopes, its the future!

have fun!

I do take your point sir, and appreciate things have moved on, and what good DJs so is a craft in itself and requires skill. But for me, the true definition of a musician remains unchanged.
