Speaking of guitar forums, any that you would recommend?
Jemsite.com is very good for Ibanez related stuff, but has very little outside of that. As far as general guitar/amps go, I've not found much useful. Since people have such different tastes they just end up being a huge troll-fest.Justin Cyder said:
They tend to be brand specific I find. TDPRI for Telecasters, Strat talk for um, strats, Gibson guitar board and so on.
Plus MyLesPaul (I forget which guitar that site is for ). Also '21 Frets' which is more for early 'JV' Squier guitars, such as my '57 reissue. I'm on them all, since I have a Tele, Strat and Les Paul (all Squier/Epiphones before anyone thinks I'm loaded ). They can be very useful for specific info, though of course you get the haters for other makes which can be a bit tedious (ie; 'Why would you like a Tele' on the Les Paul forum, etc).

He will need an amplifier of course, I suggest a Marshall half stack to start with, 50W head should be enough.
Has to be a 1987x though, the DSL 50 is far too controllable... Though my 1987x can now be used at indoor volumes since it had a PPIMV mod, it's just more fun at face melting volumes Tom_C76 said:

This is long shot but I was told someone on this site might be able to help me put a date on my Gibson Les Paul ( once gold top, now wood finish) I tried to find out on Gibson site and a few others, but got down the list as far as 1968 which had numbers 970000-972864 there was then a gap to the 1970s when there was a totally different numbering system. The number on the back of my head stock is 978047, so assuming it is 1969 but wondering why there is no mention of that number or year. Much obliged for any help. Steve

Very good point. I only got interested with this yesterday and immediately went on to a good local forum, that recommended this one. Hadnt thought of contacting Gibson directly. I generally just assume that all these big companies are impossible to talk to ( Sony, Apple etc) Usually just reams of FAQs that dont apply to me. But now you mention it I will give it a try. Thanks Steve

A local guitar forum recommended the Music section of a car forum?Try the Les Paul Forum it's free to register, they'll probably be able to tell you everything
including what the weather was like the day your guitar left the factory.
ETA The volume and tone pots will be dated, so assuming they are original, the fourth and fifth numbers will denote the year the pot was made, which should help you, bearing in mind pots could hang around the factory for a while before they were fitted.
