Picked this bad boy up for a very cheap (two digits!) price a few days ago. Damn what a fantastic bargain. Jackson Dinky 7 string.. Its the entry level model which retails at a mere 300ish new. It's in very good shape and has had the original pickups replaced with DiMarzio ones. I've never played a seven string before but its actually not the headfk I feared it might be, in fact it makes playing certain keys a breeze when before I really had to think about it.... and now I am seriously into the idea of an 8 string haha

Around 20 years ago I enjoyed messing about with various electric guitars, and then for unknown reasons just stopped playing. I recently got the itch to make a noise again, in no small way encouraged by some of the clearly very talented people posting on this thread showing off their beautiful guitars.

Then a couple of weeks ago I saw this strat on ebay for a very decent price and just couldn't resist:

Yes, I know, yet another dull strat! Paired with a little 5w Blackstar amp that I picked up from PMT, I'm rather pleased with it!

I have no illusions that I'm secretly SRV reincarnated and just need to brush up, I'm rubbish, but I'm really enjoying myself making a din and wonder why I didn't do this years ago!

Any recommendations for online resources or particularly good books etc?

JustinGuitar has a great set of courses for free. Books are also available for reasonable prices.
Follow the lessons strictly and you'll be playing to a good beginner standard within a year.

Has anyone got a Hendrix Strat? I've seen some reviews and I think it might be what I'm after.

I've been very tempted by one, not because I particularly like Strats at all but just because it looks really, really cool.

Dave Murray signature? If so then they're Seymour Duncans (unless changed). Looks like a great thing, how's it play?

Yes! Dave Murray Signature - well spotted! I have to admit to being a bit of a fan of Mr Murray and of Maiden in general, but wanted a guitar that would be a bit more versatile than just a metal guitar. Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge and neck position and a Seymour Duncan JB Jr in the middle. When I spotted it on ebay I knew it was just right for me as I was likely to want to upgrade the pups in a standard strat anyway, probably to Hot Rails. I'm very pleased with it, but having not picked up a guitar in almost 20 years (when I had an electric blue MIJ Strat) its difficult to say much more than that.

Thanks for the recommendations Lunarscope and smn!

I'm the same. 20 years without picking up a guitar. Went down the DJ/Producer path for a bit. Then decided to give guitar another whirl and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I did previously. I've learned more about different styles of music since I was doing the DJ thing and am approaching the instrument in a slightly different way than before.
I watch a lot of lessons on YouTube. There are some fantastic things out there for free. I also watch bass and even keyboard videos as I am approaching the music from a more holistic point of view than simply guitar mechanics.
I watch a lot of guitar tuition from Claus Levin, Fareed Haque, Grant Stinnett, Ben Eller, David Walliman and Rick Beato to name but a few. I've also learned a lot of stuff from bass players that I apply to guitar, notably Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey, Scott Devine. Oh and for general music theory stuff, Adam Neely is very interesting. Techicial but inspiring.

Some of these guitars look awesome. I wish I could play the guitar, it’s a VERY cool ability to have.

I'll have a look at some of those guys; as you say, the resource on the 'tube for learning new stuff on guitar these days is fantastic. I'm not keen on Eller's teaching style (although I did pick up the intro for Tubular Bells from one of his vids), but do like Walliman's stuff. Another decent 'tube channel is "Music Is Win". It's an awful name, but the lad is very good, not too technical and plays some very nice PRS kit. For more guitar theory stuff, Steve Stine has proved insightful. Based on his vids, I recently started writing a tune in Gmaj where the verse doesn't use any G chords at all. This is important for someone like me who spent 20-odd years largely playing electric blues and minor pentatonic noodling!

One of mine. I briefly posted this before, but a closer look

Not many of these around & that's a shame as it's fully loaded. Locking tuners, a P90 & a Humbucker. All the hardware including the pickups is designed & built by Duesenberg & the quality of the guitar is first class. It's Alder with a set neck & one detail I love is the saw tooth motif. It's on everything from the head stock to the pickup selector to the pickguard. It's a very well thought out guitar & sounds great, especially on the humbucker.

Anyone can play guitar - buy yourself a decent starter guitar and headphones (you don't even really need an amp these days, just an iRig or similar) and get playing!

But only one in a million can do it really well.

Something else I've learnt ... I'm not him.

Nor am I, I'm dreadful. The thing is, though: I don't care. I love playing and I love playing along to songs I love, whether it's something relatively simple like Tom Petty's 'Refugee' or something more challenging like a bit of Zakk Wylde.

To listen to me, you'd swear it was a guitar being playing by a chimpanzee wearing ski mitts, but if you could see me play without sound (which is probably for the best), you'd see an average guy making weird faces and having the time of his life pretending he's on stage with Ozzy and frequently banging his elbow on the wardrobe in the spare room. I do it only for the joy and satisfaction it brings me.

I gig about a couple of times a month on average (not good enough to be paid, but I say I do it for the love of it), and I'm about the least talented one, of the guys and gals I play with. I reckon it's time and effort. Anyone with a modicum of talent (or not) can play as good as that one in a million, the difference is being at the right place at the right time, and getting those breaks. IMHO.

Selling your soul and spending a lot of money is a fantastic way to do it too.
