Lets look at our guitars thread
Discussion
I've heard some great overdriven tones from solid state amps. Whether that's the gain stage or layering with pedals there's plenty of options.
I actually like some of the Laney solid state tones for overdrive, the old Linebacker 2x12 series on the overdrive channel was actually quite nice.
Eualyy a Wampler pedal infront of a SS Fender is also pretty decent.
I prefer valve amps but you can make lots of things sound good.

Coming along nicely. How are you doing the burst? Using any DIY kits out there?
Thanks, I've ordered some ColorTone dyes (vintage amber and tobacco) which I will use to hand rub a classic 2 tone burst... Or hopefully something vaguely similar.Walter Sobchak said:
More amp related than guitar but is it possible to get a decent edge of breakup sound out of a solid state amp?.
I'd say it's definitely possible. Lots of volume is key, I think. Modelers have come a long way, so any SS modeling amps should be worth the consideration.Am a valve amp guy through and through. The other guys in the band have gone kemper, but on the odd occasion I'm fed up of the lights interacting with the lovely single coils and creating lots of unpleasant buzz from my setup, I have brought one of these and DI'd it:
...when the FOH have done their thing, my goodness, been very impressed!

That's my kind of amp! The dirt box is a good choice too, bet the amp+drive pedal make a great pairing. Walter Sobchak said:

That "breakup" tone is the hardest to replicate via solid state IMO - better off with a pedal to do it. Some SS amps have great gain stages, but never quite hit that breakup sweet spot for me. If you're using a pedal there's a lot of "Amp sim" pedals that will help - what kind of breakup do you want?Modern high end modellers do this with ease.
Here's some 'work in progress' on a refin on my LP:
That's a genuine 'accelerated fade' with old aniline red.
For anyone who likes to see vintage guitars get superb refins and restorations, have a look at Yuuki's IG here: https://www.instagram.com/playergradevintage/

Or hopefully something vaguely similar.I've recently bought a Boss Katana (50W) which does the break up thing pretty well - I love it, light easily loud enough for what I need, simple if you want to keep it simple or you can go in and tweak with pretty much any aspect of it if you want to. Highly recommended.
While not in the same league as most of the guys and gear in this thread, being only a beginner plinker (despite owning a few guitars over the years, never really got round to playing them).
Anyway, I posted a bit back about my Westfield (?) Les Paul copy, needing a bit of attention.
Long story short, I had a tinker, rewired it with minor success, but still not 100% happy. Still feels very low output.
As a result, Mrs C is threatening to buy me a new guitar for xmas.
After talking to a guy prominent in the local music scene, she's been suggested one of these
https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/electric-g... (Other colours are available).
At least one review described the pickups as very 'hot' which I assume will mean more output to play with.
Is this a good move? Will I be happy with it for my ham fisted attempts at playing along to Spotify?

Are you near Guildford/ a shop that you could try one? If so bring yours and see how it feels/sounds compared to your own.Anyway, I posted a bit back about my Westfield (?) Les Paul copy, needing a bit of attention.

Also it is worth bearing in mind the thing that is actually making the vibrations... what amp are you using as this might be more important?
(I just got a Boss Katana 50 and it breathed new life into every guitar I own when compared to the little practice amp I had been using)

I really need to go try one of these. Currently using a Victory V30 and 2x12 cab which I absolutely adore but I need to free some cash up so they will be going, and I've only heard good things about the Katana 50 so reckon that could be a reasonable replacement. I've also got an old Peavey Bandit red stripe which I was really happy with for years, but there's something not quite right with it atm and I'm not sure I really want to spend any money into trying to fix it. I play a mixture of rock stuff from Nirvana through AC/DC to Metallica, so hopefully the K50 will be able to cover those bases.Any downsides to the K50 you've found yet? Or what's the most irritating thing about it?
