I have tried humbuckers many times over the years and almost without exception they have suffered in comparison to single coils - muffled is the word.
Ok - once the gain is cranked up but such disappointing and sterile "cleans" even from "expensive" mainstream guitars - I tried a Les Paul Studio a few months ago in GuitarGuitar - just a flat, boxy clean tone -
I bought an SG then a Les Paul and couldn't get on with either sound-wise. Ended up selling both and buying a Tele and a PRS SE to go with my Strat.Ok - once the gain is cranked up but such disappointing and sterile "cleans" even from "expensive" mainstream guitars - I tried a Les Paul Studio a few months ago in GuitarGuitar - just a flat, boxy clean tone -
Much better
Not just you, I feel the same way. Don't get me wrong, single coils have their place and for some players they couldn't ever get the sound they need with humbuckers, but for me personally I've found singles to be gutless for my own needs and I love the roar of a 'bucker.
Doesn't stop me owning both a Strat and an LP though, just in case!

When I've tried HB's I always end up playing some BIG chords -- the roar of the HB!
But then rapidly want some treble and so pick up the Tele or Jazzmaster again.
Got my old Yamaha SC600 back from the luthier. Just gave the electronics a refresh and changed the jack socket and set it up nicely. Not been played in 15+ years but feels like it used to. Nice to be back noodling and playing (badly). Also bought the VOX VT40X modelling amp which i'm still learning how to use properly.
This 'ere little devil is my latest project - a pickguard guitar. It started off as a cheapo Cougar Strat copy (I wasn't going to cut up anything good!). Was dark blue but is now black, not that that shows anyway.
It's dead easy to make, first you draw round the scratchplate, then give the body to someone with a bandsaw and ask them to cut to the line. Of course, you have to make sure they leave the neck socket and the bridge mounting.
Now the difficult bit starts, 'cos you have to find new places for the strap buttons and the jackplate. I put my jackplate in the back. And I shortened the head too. (Or more accurately, Bandsaw Guy did it.)
New Wilkinson trem fitted, backplate shortened to fit, and jack socket in place.
This is the first scratchplate I fitted (well it was July 4th).
I've now fitted a clear scratchplate, so I can put what I like behind it, and changing that will of course change the entire colour scheme! This is my first one, a section of Ordnance Survey map.
I didn't realise until I fitted it, that the background colour was very similar to a Fender 'mint green' plate.
And if you liked that, just wait until you see what I've got planned for Christmas!

New toy: '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb hand wired.
I've wanted a Blackfaced Fender amp since the 1980s when I played my Strat through a friend's 1960s Fender Twin Reverb. Too expensive and heavy for me at the time (and still too heavy now for that matter).
I've recently been on a search through the smaller re-issue and custom models, favouring the '65 Deluxe Re-issue. However, I found out about the '64 Custom Deluxe hand wired model and took a gamble ordering one: I've got a 30 day returns policy, but from the brief try I had this lunchtime I won't be needing it: It sounds so rich and sparkly with my Strat and my P90 LP sounded gorgeous through it too; almost like having a bass play along with me.
Can't wait to get home tonight and have a bit more of a play and try my Tele and Humbucker LP through it as well.
They get a lot of grief on the forums due to the price, but for me:
A. I'll have forgotten that long after I'm still enjoying the lovely sound.
B. Really good vintage ones aren't cheap, still need work and some look like a dog's dinner.
C. I've wanted this sound in a box I can carry since 1980 and I'm not getting any younger.
Z. I need to take a better photo.

Wow! I take it you live in a detached place, with a couple of acres around it so that you don't upset the neighbours? That pickguard guitar - I really like that! What an interesting thing.

Some better photos, now that I've had a bit more of a play this evening. It's not really a bedroom amp, but it still sounds good at less than ear piercing levels. They've modified it in some way so the handwired version is 20 watts rather than the usual 22 watts for a Deluxe reverb, once you get to about 5 it starts to crunch nicely (with the Les Paul P90s anyway).
