And my favourite has to be my Schecter, Floyd Rose, Fishman pickups, great finish, and plays and sounds great, what more can you want smile

Ooooh that is a bit gorgeous... Very unusual gradiated finsh too. Kinda wish the headstock was plain, but that's just me. What model is it?

This is it: https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/18020632221...

The stripes are not just for show! I believe (may be wrong) they are wooden inserts used to cover up the carbon fibre reinforcement rod.

I am really liking Schecter, they are great to play, top quality hardware and reasonably priced.

The Fishman pickups are also sweet as fk!

Schecter have just brought out the same spec (minus Floyd rose) in explorer style shape, which also looks pretty cool.

Actually, the stripes show the laminated construction that most thru-neck guitars have. As with any ply/laminated wood, the grains of the individual layers can be at 90-degrees to give extra strength and rigidity. The contrasting ply colours are just a nice side effect. Bonus: there's no glued set-neck joint, so the maker can sculpt away unnecessary wood and give you super easy access at the top end of the neck.

Nice guitar. smile

This arrived today...B stock (due to some invisible mark on the front panel) and it meant they had one in stock to send:

It's the new Marshall Studio Vintage 20 watt head (aka 'Plexi') SV20H. I already have the 2525H Mini Jubilee, but this is quite different (and also very loud, so not really a home amp). I wanted something with more power than the 1 watt JMP1-H head I have (which is supposed to be a similar sound) so I can take to studio rehearsals and use at gigs.

Had to get an attenuator for my Marshall SV20H. Took it to the studio for rehearsals and it was very loud even in 5 watt mode (studio has a 4x12). Couldn't use it at home, except set clean with gain set low. Of course I was aware this amp needs to be cranked to get 'the sound' but hadn't appreciated just how much it needed it.

Anyway it took 3 attempts and 2 different shops before I got one that wasn't damaged in transit. It allows the level to be dropped down to sensible (not exactly 'bedroom') levels so I can play it at home and get used to the controls/sound. Doesn't seem to change the tone either, just makes it quieter, so it's a result. I'll be able to trim the level in the studio too as we use different rooms, some are bigger than others and allow a higher level.

If you can get one undamaged in transit, then I'd recommend this one: Palmer PD106 (mine is for 16ohm amp outputs, but they do an 8ohm version too).

I'm fancying an SG ... any advice about what to look for before I buy ? ... I presently have a couple of Jacksons and a Maverick ... I've owned a Les Paul Custom many years ago and found it too heavy
I'm into Def Leppard, ZZ Top and currently AC/DC, hence the desire for an SG

Make sure that you try one first.. I had one a year or so back and just couldn't get on with it. Felt neck heavy and unbalanced to me. I moved it on in favour of a Tele, which I love, and a PRS 245 for occasional humbucking duties

Now lets be clear i already have too many guitars (2 x Martin accoustics, 2 x fender stratocasters, 1 x squier telecaster, 1 x Gibson les paul deluxe, and a Gibson 335) so why oh why am i really considering another stratocaster!

In fairness of the stratocasters i have one is a Japan Strat which is beautiful to play and will never be taken out incase it gets stole, the other is a mexican strat which plays okay but mainly I’m happy to take it to a pub and if it gets taken off a stand i wouldnt be devastated.

So then the potential new one

Came up on a dealers Facebook page and my god it’s stunning. Would be my first custom shop Fender and so nice that this isn’t a relic as they’re not my style. My have to have a chat with the shop as can’t get to try it and its quite valuable so don’t want them to risk posting it if I’m not at least 80% that its the one for me! Plus there is a draw to getting on a plane going over to the factory and placing a personal order which i believe would be possible through the same dealer.

I know it won’t make me sound any better but it would definitely make me smile while playing it, and surely thats the point, no?

SGs are an image choice. If you like the image buy the guitar. If it's more about the playing than the image, get something else.

I tried a SG some years ago, and agree with other posters assessment : it's a nose-heavy plank.

But if one likes the look and sound, then work around it.

Wow, stunner. But if you won't risk going out and playing it is it worth it?

It will definitely get played it just would never get taken down the pub, thats the mexican strat or telecasters role. As an aside that squier telecaster is the best £139 i have ever spent. Its only an Affinity so second lowest in the whole squier line up. But it holds tune like nothing else and can scream for attention over some of my other guitars which are supposedly leaps and bounds better.

It is the distinction of it doesn’t matter what it cost it matters what you can do together.
