Long time lurker first time poster... can anyone recommend an electro-acoustic for my level... I’d describe my level as advanced beginner/low intermediate. Budget around 250. If possible links because I’m in Austria which means either EU delivery or Amazon..

Thanks!

I bought an Ibanez TCM50 from Thomann a few months ago, I haven’t used it plugged in at all but I have been really pleased by it, despite not having played one before ordering it. Low action, nice neck, I think it’s fantastic value for money.

I had tried a Fender Malibu in a local guitar shop, which was also nice - and a similar price point - but it would have needed the frets polishing if I had bought it. The Ibanez was great straight out of the box and delivery from Thomann was fine.

The only bonus the Malibu had was it had a built in tuner, which would have been a nice feature for the Ibanez to have.

My exotic wood Ibanez was in that price range - reverb or eBay is your best bet.

Since seeing one in a guitar shop while we were on holiday, I’ve been lusting after the Malcolm Young Gretsch replica for about £2500.
I like the look, I like AC/DC, why not?
Well, if I’m being totally honest with myself, I’m not any good. If anyone asks, do you play guitar, I always respond with, well, I play with guitars. This isn’t false modesty, I like to tinker and make noises like on my favourite songs, but I’m not a guitarist.
My level of play doesn’t warrant 2.5 bags spending on it.
Oh, and I haven’t got anything like that kind of cash lying around.
After the post above mentioned an Ibanez I didn’t recognise, I checked it out on Thomann. While there I had the usual browse and spotted the gretsch G5222, which appears to have 90% of the look and 90% of the sound at a sixth of the price.

Anyone had a play with one? The fella who does the reviews on andertons seemed to think it was decent.

I feel like it’s still a better guitar than I deserve, but it’s an achievable target.

Worth it?

They do seem to be well regarded, but I'm looking for a second hand 6131T, because I'm a guitar snob, and it will more than likely appreciate in value in the long term.

Anyway, Here's a picture from our reheasal the other night, the Gretsch cost me £800, the SG £250, the 100 watt Laney AOR £150, and the ProAmp cab was £45. You would struggle to buy that lot for three grand these days.

You might not think you are worthy of the guitar from a playing viewpoint, so justify it as an investment.

My projecto guitar is taking time. I've ended up sanding it down to bare wood from grey primer once, then sprayed it with blue tinted primer and Sonic Blue gloss. Once I'd clear coated it I decided it looked too deep a shade of blue, so I flatted it down again and added some Olympic white to the blue to give a more 'faded' Sonic Blue. Luckily it didn't change shade much once clear coated, so I've finally been able to start buffing it this weekend.

Pleased with how it's turning out now, though I need to go over a bit behind the trem cut out as it's still a little dull (the light was going when I was buffing it this evening). I did all the sides with P2500 grade and buffed by hand, then used a DA on the back and front.

I finished the neck earlier this week, so I fitted it on my other Strat as a temporary measure so I could cut the nut slots and drill for the string tree, plus I was eager to see how a fat neck feels on a Strat (fantastic as it turns out). It's turned my brown Strat into a '59 look a like with it's mix of two tone sunburst, single ply 'guard and the rosewood fingerboard. I'll fine tune the nut slots and truss rod adjustment, etc once it's on the blue body, but I want the paint to harden a bit more first.

I wired up the pickguard this weekend too and laced up the wiring for the mid boost to make it all a bit tidier and easier to fit everything into the body:

Top work OldSkool...

I do not have the patience. I have no problem doing any other guitar maintenance, I don't mind building my own valve amps and effects, I worked as a touring guitar and amp tech for a few years, and worked at a PA company, maintaining their touring rigs, but the cosmetic side of guitars just isn't for me. I can retolex or fix a new grill cloth no problem, I have rewired a 32 channel 20K PA, fitted out an old school tape based recording studio, done front of house sound in front of a festival crowd, but paint a guitar? Just no.

I'd have twisted them pickup wires though...

Thanks, though my patience is being tested now: I buffed through the clear on the top edge and the darker shade of blue I'd sprayed previously showed though. At first I thought it looked like a mild relic effect, but over the weekend it just began to annoy me so I sanded back the front to bare wood and put some primer on last night. Still not happy, so I'm going to sand the whole thing back to bare wood and start again. mad I've got grain filler, sanding sealer and more blue and white nitro coming so I can do it all over again...

Strat pickup wires aren't usually twisted, even if there was enough length left to do that. However, once all this sodding painting is done I will paint the cavities with conductive paint to go with the full pickguard shield, so it should be nicely shielded once it's (finally) done.

I should have just bought a ready finished body and practiced playing more. boxedin

This is why I just Tru Oil everything biggrin

I listed my Faith Venus Hi Gloss for sale over the weekend, to clear some space. Was contacted last night by a guy who wanted to trade his Faith Neptune Blood Moon for it. Said to myself last year when I got rid of everything and started again that I wouldn't turn down a reasonable trade offer for something I was looking to get rid of anyway, so I accepted. Looks a bit different, is slightly bigger, but basically plays and sounds the same. What a waste of time!

Right so I know i went quiet after asking for help with which Amp to buy.

I have treated myself to a Spark Pearl and it should be with me soon/ in the next few weeks/ in a few months/ at some point this year (hopefully).

Will give some feedback when i get it.

Evening all!

Got a question for the gear geeks and those much smarted/experienced than I. I've been eyeing up MultiFX units, for my use I've been looking at the Line 6 Pod Go multiFX https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/guitar-ped...

I've got a Joyo Zombie II 20w head going in to a 1x12 cab (likely upgrade to a 2x12 or bigger in the near future). I've copied the link below for tech specs of my head. https://www.thomann.de/gb/joyo_zombie_ii.htm

Now, I've been having a nosey at reviews etc and seem fairly happy with it but I'm fairly ignorant to gear, cable methods and all of that stuff. Usually I just plug stuff in and if it sounds good, I'm happy. With this, it it just a case of Guitar>MultiFX>Amp head? And also, I'm assuming you can just have it plugged in to the USB on the computer and play with it's software on the fly?

I realise lots of sounds like stuff that is sorted by a 2 minute google but I'm just confusing my brain! Only got the Joyo last year and had a line 6 spider (no joking now) for the past 10+ year, it had everything built in so saved me a lot of hassle with effects etc. Appreciate any help and input along with any recommendations for similar products!

Depends how you use (and want to use) the amp. Do you use its overdrive/distortion? Do you want to continue using it?

The simplest approach is to run the amp clean, and go guitar to FX unit to amp input.

If you're only going to use effects after the amp's overdrive, put the FX unit in the amp's effect loop.

If you want maximum flexibility, use the 4-cable method (not as saucy as it sounds, alas), which lets you use the amp's overdrive, and have effects before and after it.

Guitar goes to the FX unit's input.
The FX unit's effect loop send goes to the amp's input.
The amp's effect loop send goes to the FX unit's effect loop return.
The FX unit's output goes to the amp's effect loop return.

You basically then have a signal chain that goes guitar to FX unit, with the amp's preamp in the FX unit's loop, and then out of the FX unit to the amp's power amp to drive the speakers. Thus you can have (for example) compression, wah, and the FX unit's overdrives before the amp distortion, but modulation effects, reverb, and delay, after the amp's distortion. If the Pod unit lets you monkey with the effect order then you can do some really weird stuff, like reverb before distortion (which has its place, done sensibly).

Great post thank you!

I do use the amps distortion channel but it's rather limited with adjustability. Suits some of my guitars better than others. The only pedal I consistently use is a little sound gate. Aside from that I just dabble with a distortion, Whammy & Wah.

All sounds quite manageable and it seems to be the best 'bang for buck' for what I'm after.

No probs. I have a Helix so I can guess at what the Pod GO is like - I'm not sure you'll need to use the amp distortion any more, though it can be useful to have it available.
