snap.... i've not had it very long and just can't bond with it.... my newest purchase (acoustic) is a martin and it's always my go-to acoustic.. the ovation doesn't get touched. may as well chuck it in with the 8 string (again, i just don't touch it whereas my schecter 7 string i find very useful) against a dingwall combustion 5 string bass... incredible bit of kit...

I had an Ovation in the late 1990's, and bought into the hype.

It didn't sound that good to me, and it also couldn't be played sitting down as it slid off my knee.

I really wanted to like it, but couldn't.

Still, always nice to see somebody posting pics of an acoustic, amongst the endless sea of strats.

When I was looking into getting an electro acoustic for local open mic nights, a friend lent me his Ovation. I don't know the full details, but it was about 30 years old and knowing him, it wouldn't have been a cheap model. However I just didn't get on with it; I'm relatively slim, but the rounded back seemed to make the guitar want to roll off my stomach and make it hard to play. I very rarely play seated, so I can't remember if that was a problem as well, but wasn't for me.

Ended up buying a cheap late 80s Washburn as I didn't want something too valuable to take to pubs anyway; it did the job, but only once, then they closed the pubs (and everything else) after my first performance. wink

My apologises for adding to the sea of Strats, but I'm really pleased with how mine turned out: I'm taking it to band rehearsals tomorrow night through my Marshall Mini Jubilee and some pedals...can't wait. smile

I too had an Ovation in the late 90s, and I too quickly went off it. To me it didn't sound much like an actual acoustic guitar. It was okay at a gig, unplug an electric and plug that in, and it would sufficiently different, plus of course everyone could see you'd changed to another guitar. But when recording at home I never bothered plugging it in - just shoved a mike in front of it.

So I bought a Martin!

Sold the Ovation to a friend who loves it, still has it and is still using it.

In the words of Bon Jovi...we're half way there. wink

Sanded down the shellac sanding sealer yesterday ready for starting the base gold coats.

I sprayed the gold (actually 'Les Paul Gold Top Gold' as I already had a tin from when I was going to refinish my Gold Top Tribute, but I changed my mind):

I sprayed it flat on my Black and Decker workmate, so I put some screws in the neck holes and strap button hole to support it after I'd sprayed the back. Seems to have come out alright considering my less than ideal/not quite cleanroom garage. smile I'll probably sand a few small defects back tomorrow and dust a couple more coats of gold on before I start the transparent red coats.

RS, I presume you know that only the later ones used the gold basecoat, earlier ones were silver.

I did know there are some silver and some gold base coats, but didn't know the timeline. Not too bothered about any historical accuracy since it's just a 2019 MIM Jaguar that I've modified, plus I already had the gold paint. My wife wanted a few picture frames spraying gold too, so it helps keep me in her good books, especially as I 'drunk ordered' an ex-display Marshall amp on Friday night that arrives tomorrow. hehe

Was a bit nervous of messing it up, but this is after I'd sprayed the back first, then did the front. Trying not to get stripes in the colour, but also not getting runs in it either. I'll leave it to dry off for a few hours, then hang it up over night as it's a warm evening and will help it dry. I'll put 4-5 coats of clear on it over the next few days:

I've been having problems with dust, fluff and then my spray gun, but eventually managed to get 4-5 coats of clear nitro on the Jaguar body. Annoyingly it didn't seem as shiny after the clear coats dried and the edges were a bit dull because of dry/over spray when I changed to another smaller 'touch up' spray gun.

Hard to tell, but the sides were more of a satin/rough finish once dried:

I wet sanded with P1000, then P2000 and a light buff with my DA polisher using a medium Menzerna polish brought the shine back:

EDIT:

I had an opportunity to give the front a little buff. I don't think it'll need much more to be honest, but will leave it a bit longer and give it a quick final buff again before re-assembling it.

This is the 'Parchment' pickguard and Staytrem bridge positioned for the photo, not screwed on yet:

I did some wet sanding with micromesh this weekend, followed by a final buff with the DA. Got the second coat of conductive paint on the cavities and left it hanging in the garage to fully harden in this warm weather.

For those tired of electric guitars:

A friend asked me to have a look at his Washburn acoustic: It was his late Father's guitar and has suffered over the years. We weren't sure if it was just dirt or that the finish was somehow faded away due to wear. Turns out it was just many years of him using 'Mr Sheen' and then a build up of dirt. It was actually really satisfying to do.

This was after an initial test polish to see if it was just dirt or worn through lacquer. You can see how dull the top of the guitar is as well as the uncleaned/polished right side of the guitar sides:

The fretboard was pretty ugly too, showing part way through the clean up:

With a little bit of fretboard oil on afterwards:

Put the strings back on and tuned it up: A truss rod tweak and a little packing piece under the saddle has resolved most of the fret buzz, but it'll really need a fret dressing and better set up than I can do. Thankfully we know someone locally who can do this (is currently giving my blue Strat a fret level and dress).

I'll be giving it back to him tomorrow night. It feels a bit like an episode of 'Repair shop' as I was so careful not to do anything irreversible to it given the obvious sentimental value it has. I think he'll be pleased with it. smile

My friend was pleased with his acoustic; gave me a really nice bottle of gin as a thank you, which was completely unexpected.

I got my Jaguar put back together tonight and had a quick play before taking some photos. Pleased with how it's turned out, apologies if I'm spamming the thread with pictures of it, but just to show it finished:

Very nice, I do appreciate an offset Fender although not to everyone’s taste…

Thanks very much..been playing our set list on it tonight, ready for a band rehearsal tomorrow evening. Think I'll take it along, plus my new Marshall SC20 combo...I'll just make really sure I've got the gig bag zipped up properly as there is still no sign of my Jaguar hard case.

Love the finish on that Okdskool!

Anyone into Mansons at all? They’re a bit special as in different laugh . Been an Ibanez fan for years and have 7 or 8 including a USA custom and the feel of these is completely different. Must admit I’ve fallen in love with the look of a markerless neck as well.

Once you get used to it, necks with fret markers look too “busy” somehow, including all my Ibanezs, although I have an S with just a 12th fret marker. Anyone else know what I mean?

Good god, I think I've done a sex wee.

Love Mansons, though doubtful I'll ever own one. First time I saw Matt using the kaoss pad it just amazed me.

I do love their simplistic designs that still look 'heavy', similar to some Charvels

After many years of painfully lugging around a Fender Twin I bought this today, a Fender mustang GTX100 modelling amp.
Has a couple,of hundred presets, which can be modified, and can download more and control with your phone, a 1x12 Celestion, a footswitch controller and 100w. I haven't tried it at silly levels but first impressions are very good. I still have the Twin but my back and previous slight hérnias Will thank me.
