Purchased a few days ago. A ‘59 Murphy Lab Les Paul. I vowed I’d never buy a relic guitar as I prefer to relic them myself. But this guitar found me and it plays so beautifully. The sound is epic too. Paired with a Marshall plexi style amp the Beano tones are right there.

Aquired a bit of an oddity over xmas.

I originally thought it was a propa 80s RG550 from photos but that didn't make sense when i got a closer look.

It was filthy so i disassembled... and neck says close ..but no..

So bit of extra digging and found this is the closest i can find.

https://reverb.com/item/43870375-ibanez-rg450-rg55...

So an early 90s RG450. That reverb ad is 99% the same - except mine has no model decal on the back of the headstock.

Anyhoo its not a style for guitar i'd normally choose and ive never wanted a trem - however im liking it and its rock solid ability to stay in tune.

Bad news is the thin flat neck is making my strat and gibson necks suddenly feel like tree trunks!!

Beautiful. Congratulations. A '59 Custom burst is my planned purchase for May - but I have been adament no Murphy Lab. What swung it for you?

Firstly, it’s a light aged one so not too much whacking or sanding by Mr Murphy and Co. Secondly, it’s a really light example. I believe the Murphy Lab pick the lighter ones (I may be wrong here). Mine is just a smidge over 8lbs (8lbs 3 ounces if I remember correctly). Thirdly, the maple is exactly what I wanted. No crazy flames or tiger stripes. I was looking for something subtle and not too showy. Some of the original 60s Les Paul bursts were getting a bit over the top for my liking (as well as the later reissues in subsequent decades). And lastly, it played and sounded like no Les Paul I’ve played before. It was absolutely streets ahead of others I tried in the shop and previously in other shops. It has a really bright sound for a Gibson, possibly due to the lightness. I know it’s completely subjective but this guitar definitely found me. It’s funny because I very nearly didn’t try it as, like you, I’d ruled them out as a bit naff. I was aiming for one of the VOS ones. There’s something about the ML that I tried. Maybe I just got lucky but I’d be surprised if they didn’t pick the best ones to relic.

Besides, I won’t mind the odd ding now when it happens!

Got another guitar... feel like I've gelled with it. There's a few things need sorting - that can be sorted - I found a small scallop in the fretboard side that I think is a result of someone being a little eager with a fret file, maybe? See attached pic. Would it bother you??? It would normally bother me, but... the guitar is asking me to overlook this one foible and stick with it...

Brilliant, thanks for the insight. Certainly sounds like you found the perfect LP - it looks beautiful, and could easily be mistaken as from the period based on those photos. Enjoy it.

I will have to play a few MLs to see what I think.

Same pickups as mine ,what do you think of them ?
I find them quite spanky which is not something I actually like ,and the bass is ‘woolly ‘ .
Running through a quad cortex and on some patches it sounds good but dreadful on others (all the patches I use sound great on my other guitars) ,I’m debating changing them.

I’ve got a 540s I bought new 1988 (HSS)
Put a Super Distortion the bridge after a few years and there it remains to this day, sounds great. I really like the Dimarzio Tone Zone as well

The Matsumoku stuff was great, I’ve got five Aria basses ranging from ‘77 to ‘83, they are bloody heavy but play and sound fantastic.

Great photo. To hell with all those people who argue for the reintroduction of national service. I think it should be compulsory for all teenagers to spend at least eight hours a day noodling on a guitar in their bedroom.

Nice Story

What stood out to me is that Paul McCartney has only bought four Hofner basses in his career.

He obviously will have the odd six string as well but by my reckoning one of the greatest musicians in his genre has got a much lower purchase rate than us lot rofl

Let's speculate on whether money changed hands for it to be "returned to its original owner".

I'm assuming stolen mislaid goods must rightfully be returned even if there is no proof of what happened?

I read that this morning. I do wonder if professional musicians such as him become as attached to their instruments in the same way lesser mortals do. I’ve seen videos of session musicians (Tim Pierce being one) who simply see their instruments as tools.

Take David Gilmour for example. He messed around with his black Strat for years, eventually gouging out a massive chunk of wood to fit a new trem. I’d never think of doing that to one of my guitars. For him it was a tool on which to make music.

They seem to be one end or the other

You have Rory Gallagher, SRV and Jimmy Page using a relatively small number of instruments

And collectors like Mark Knopfler. If I was travelling the world, playing and earning megabucks, I'd be visiting the Collectors shops; playing and buying all the time.

I was genuinely surprised that McCartney had only got through 4 basses.
