For the last couple of days I have been playing an old CAN album, "Limited Edition", for the first time since I was given it by a friend in 1974.

Must say that I don't get it at all. Is it just German Beefheart?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Bought that 'back in the day'. But only because it was 50p, I think. Same reason I bought Camembert Electrique by Gong, which was 49p.
Can are a bit of an acquired taste, though, like a lot of 70's Kraut rock (see Faust/Amon Duul 2 etc). I've re-visited it a few times over the years, but it doesn't get much more 'ear-friendly' even after repetition.

Thats me that is!

I have been a fan for years, got all the albums, and lots of the solo records too.

In fact I got another one last week, a album Edelwiess with Jaki Liebizet on it.

In my view, thier best work is Tago Mago, which is in my top 5 records of all time ever ever.

Koening - OK but tell me what it is that you can hear that I am missing? What were CAN for? Is it supposed to be enjoyable to listen to and entertaining?

Seems to me that a lot of it is self-indulgent twiddling and not even particularly competent twiddling. That's OK but why did Universal Records give them a contract? I just don't get it....

Even I have to admit Unlimited Edition / Limited Edition was not their best hour, but Tago Mago, is one of the best Magick Ritual type sounds on record, with Augmn, and the brilliant side long percussive motorik trance of Halellueh.

It is there just waiting to be found.

If you don't like it, well there you are, listen to Chris Rea instead.

Well thanks for the pointers but you still haven't really told me what CAN are all about. But enough for now.

Actually I think Shamrock Diaries is a pretty good album. Hired Gun and Stainsby Girl are cracking tracks. Good shaggin' album from memory.

Writing this to the second Leftfield album which is very good in parts and plan to follow with some Tricky
